Running from Ware in Hertfordshire, down to Islington in London is The New River. But this is a conundrum as it is not 'new' and it's not a river. It is actually an aqueduct.
Built between 1609 and 1619 it starts from an Artesian well in Ware and runs 40 kilometres (25 miles) to London and still supplies drinking water to the city. Built by Sir Hugh Myddleton, the aqueduct crosses underneath many roads and also provides a footpath next to it running the entire distance. This place I have photographed is at a place called Great Amwell, and on and island there is an obelisk to him, and his surveyor. Next to this just off the small road nearby is the site of 'Annes Well' where the village took its name. Just down stream is Amwell Marsh pumping station, more in the next posts...
