The ancestor of this thread was begun by philmar in 2009. An abbreviated version of philmar's introduction follows.
OK—anyone can take a shot of an interesting skyline or beautiful building. How challenging is that? A more challenging task is taking an everyday slice of urban inanity and turning that into an interesting shot.
Post your shots of urban landscape fragments stressing the fragments. . . . Not shots of a building but an interesting fragment of the building--a window, its sign, . . . , its porch, its cracking paint. . . . an interesting object in the urban landscape (i.e., hydrant, sewer grate, . . . snow on a barbed wire fence, etc.). It can be . . . a decaying wall, beautiful old neon sign, a lone piece of trash on a cobblestone street.
One of the things I like about photography is the way one can take something common and mundane, yet somehow engage the viewer to notice its beauty or interestingness. Post shots of architectural details or objects that most people walk by without noticing—-a photo that suggests there’s something worth stopping for the next time one walks by (if one had time in this busy life).
