Every week we select a new theme, and then go out and shoot that theme. This week the theme is Glass. As always be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme, creativity is what we're looking for.

This week, let's take on the challenge of photographing Glass..

Here are the rules:

  • Because this activity is supposed to encourage us to get out and shoot, please don't post old shots from your archives.
  • Shots need to be taken between Tuesday, after the new theme is posted and the following Monday by sunset (Whenever that is for you).
  • Snapshots and art are equally welcome -- just get out & shoot, and then share!
  • Post your shots at any time during the week.
  • Please abide by the Focus on Photography posting rules.
  • Please keep your contributions to a maximum of 4 images or less.
As always be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme, creativity is what we're looking for.

That's it!

Have fun!

How about some volcanic glass, Obsidian. Found throughout the world, used by all the ancient civilizations. Still collected today with artisan's making jewelry, art pieces and knives/spearheads. We collected locally and then I broke it down and tumble polished. Here are some Mahogany, Black and even a piece of Snowflake.

Obsidian is a nostalgia item for me, having come from the San Joaquin Valley and taken (i.e., been taken on) many trips to the Sierra and its foothills. Occasionally we'd find it on the ground. It was always the clear black kind. I didn't know there were other colors!

Those polished up nicely!

Thanks, I loved polishing Obsidian, never knew how it would turn out.

There are a lot of different colors, I concentrated mostly on what we found. I've seen amazing rainbow, green, red and have polished some Fireworks that I purchased. Sliced thin a lot of it is clear, I'm not sure how to get good photos of it.
Several years back there was a doctor that was well known for knapping knives. He made one and his surgeon used it to operate on his shoulder, said it was as sharp as any scalpel.

Great contribution Adrian! Those are some lovely finished pieces.
Thanks!! Lucky to have that glassworks just across the road. Some of the work that’s produced there is stunning… but with price tags to match. That blue piece in the foreground is $9000!

do you get them to produce bottles for your distillery product? some specialty items maybe?

No, but we have talked about the idea. Maybe one day we will get some bottles done. The ultra-premium end of the market is very small in New Zealand and it would be hard to move $1000+ bottles of gin. They do a range of hand blown glasses that we sell and the lighting for our bar was made there by a friend.

He has a distillery product?

@AdeR You have a distillery product? Do tell...

Yes. I own a boutique gin distillery. We recently moved it so we would have more space to grow and also to be able to add a cocktail bar. The real bonus is that we now have cool neighbours like art galleries and glass works.

I'm currently taking my fourth glassmaking course in Amsterdam; this one came out of the kiln last night: an quick experiment to make a glass replica of a chocolate cookie (in a plaster mold) in a very simple way, resulting in a glass cookie baked at 823°C. Not entirely perfect, but for now, my focus is on learning rather than production; that might come later.

And some finished pieces of glass...

I'm completely in love with the vase standing all the way to the right in the foreground. Can you tell me which glassblower - name/ website - makes this kind of work? My wife and I have been collecting glass art for almost 45 years and are always interested in something that is not yet really well known here in Europe and especially The Netherlands.
