Not sure how much of a surprise this will be to others...

Curlews are traditionally associated with wild places - high moorland and estuarine mudflats. But at this time of year, we have substantial numbers of them living in Edinburgh city. Passing my old school playing fields yesterday, I took these shots of the rugby pitches...

The houses in the background are on a main thoroughfare, Ferry Road.

Oh, and there are oystercatchers too, but they are commonplace! :p
 
The oystercatchers are also here in the city but curlews is a new one. Guess they have to go somewhere as there natural habitat is destroyed.
