What is your next purchase?

Seriously considering Sony a7CR paired with Sigma 20-200 f/3.5-6.3 for my travel photography needs. I've had to leave my Canon R5 with RF 24-105 f/4 at home in the past two international trips, opting to take just my old Samsung Galaxy S23 phone. This choice saved me from having to endure physical pain on my aging body, but the overall photo quality suffered miserably. I just visited a local camera store where I got to handle Sony a7CR and Sigma 20-200. The combo felt so much lighter and smaller in my hand.

Maybe consider renting at your destination. Then you can carry less on flights.

I’ve got my eye on a fantastic sale and I am filled with desire, but no coin for a couple of days yet.

If I miss it, I miss it, but I want it.

Any and all other potential purchases are on hold. Filter fun will have to wait.

I don’t want to hex it, so I won’t say what it is, but I want to burn the world to ash with xenon fire.

Cheers,
Ian

Flash fell through, but is back on sale again, yet I am amorous toward a certain telephoto lens.

Got that Schneider Kreuznach Radiant Black 1 95mm cinema filter, but because the step-down ring is taking forever, I haven’t had a chance to use it.

I did get a 43->67 ring, so I can slap some diffusion on my ~35mm equivalent and take trashy night shots, and flat, wintry day shots that look as sullen and monochrome as it does to the eye.

Oh, and I got a magnum reflector and 10° grid, and that’s just lovely, if you like that kind of light.

Cheers,
Ian

Today I replaced my several-years-old Canon EF 100–400 mm f/4.5–5.6L IS II USM lens with a used RF 100–500mm f/4.5–7.1L IS USM. And now I have two options: either I pay an extra 23,000 CZK (approx. USD 1,120 / EUR 950), or I hand over my R5, which I bought in January 2021, to the dealer and he gives me an R7 that has taken about 2,500 shots, with no additional payment. So instead of an R5 Mk II and an R5, I would have an R5 Mk II and an R7.

For aircraft, and sometimes also for motocross and speedway, a crop body would probably be advantageous, and if the R7 had the same control layout as the R5 and R5 Mk II, I wouldn’t hesitate and would go ahead with the exchange. I now have two weeks to decide, during which I’ll be testing the R7—I have it on loan at the moment—but there won’t be any airshows, motocross, or speedway during that time.

I actually gave some real thought to upgrading my camera. It still works, same as it ever did, but it is nearly 14 years old.

Same make, or clean break? Nothing need be decided today. But I’m thinking big guns.

Cheers,
Ian

I'm interested to hear of your decision on the R7. Our needs are quite different (I don't shoot motor sports) but I'd like to know what you think of the R7 verses using the R5s in crop mode. The difference in control layout would be a big deterrence for me. I'm not in the market for an APS-C, but still curious.

Congrats on the RF100-500. Would also be interested in hearing your thoughts on that compared to the EF100-400 after you've had a chance to put it through its paces (y)

I will definitely share my conclusions in two weeks. In the meantime, I described my situation in a Facebook group dedicated to the RF 100-500, and quite a few people responded who had the opportunity to try both the R7 and the R5 and therefore have practical experience with both bodies. The majority opinion was to keep the R5, partly because of the different ergonomics. For now, I think I will stick with my current combination of R5 + R5 MkII. In any case, In any case, I still want to have two bodies so that I don't have to change lenses when there is no time to do so, especially in dusty environments.

Odds and sods...

I had been putting these off for some time, but now is the time for proper light stand adornment.

Cheers,

I'm excited to be receiving a new (another) tripod, new ball head, tripod mount ring for my RF100macro, and macro focusing rail. Nothing fancy - just simple tools that I can bang on trees and rocks and submerge in water occasionally :ROFLMAO:

My first love was macro/close-up photography and I was a staunch tripod user back in the film days. Then went nearly exclusively non-tripod (over 95%) after going digital. My switch to birding from about 2008 had me shooting macros only about 20% of the time.

Hoping the new gear will reinvigorate my passion for close up work (y)

Just received Viltrox 14mm f/4 lens for Sony A7CR to fill the need for wide angle shots when I travel. For a $199 lens, I'm impressed and very pleased with the early results. Had never heard of Viltrox before, but someone mentioned the lens on another forum site and decided to give it a shot. A first test shot at a local children's park.

Looks good! (y)

  • Thanks!

Mine will probably either be getting a 135 f2L again, or replacing my old 6D with a 5D4. Or both if I'm feeling brave.
