Memorial Day has come and gone, 4th of July is ahead of us, and the big holiday sale season is still a few months away, but now's as good a time as any to talk about what your next photography-related purchase is going to be.

For me, I might finally jump in and get an equatorial mount to do some astro photography. I have my eye on the Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro. I have been wanting to get a real mount for a long time now and there is not too much exciting on the lens or body front for me, so this might be where I drop my next couple of grand!

So, what is on everyone else's wish list?

It seems like the R5 Mark II is imminent but I haven’t heard anything about an R7 Mark II, unfortunately. I hope it appears at least in 2025.
There are a few YouTube videos mentioning the R7 Mark II. Mere speculation, but some people think it will appear this year.

I really want to have a go at astro so been looking at bases and drives. No telescope yet, just the lenses I already have but I do need something to track well.

I posted in the Astro forum a few months ago asking for mount recommendations and the Sky-Watcher EQ6-R Pro seemed to get the vote from the regulars there. It seems to get great reviews online and I think hits the right price vs. features point, at least for someone like me who is pretty familiar with finding my way around the night sky but looking to dabble in astro photography. I have a Televue TV-85 apochromat that is a fabulous piece of optics that I hope to be able to use on the mount, so I will need to get an adapter to couple that with my camera, and I also hope to use just a regular DSLR/lens combo to do some widefield and relatively bright object imaging. Not sure my skies are dark enough for distant fuzzies, so will have to do a bit more research on filters and such to see if I can get anything salvageable.

After a weekend of hit-and-miss focussing with the EF 85mm 1.2L I'm considering getting a RF version. Interesting that the parallel importers here are approx NZ$1000 cheaper than Canon resellers locally (and a bit cheaper than B&H plus shipping to N.Z.)

I can rent one for $100/day so will probably do that first.

Another canon body so I have a spare to take on safari in September. Probably a lightly used R5, dont think I'll be able to swing the budget for an r5ii, whenever they're available. Unless they look amazing... :D

The 100-500 is definitely on my list. Probably the only lens that I covet at the moment as the rest of my EF lenses are doing just fine. I miss the portability of my 100-400 II.
I loved it when I rented it but feel like I get by well enough with my RF 70-200 2.8.

I had rented an R6ii and feel slightly let down by my R6, so there's a chance I pull the trigger and blow a million bucks on an r5ii

YOLO... wait 6 months and they may appear on the Canon refurb site. I picked up a R5 during a recent refurb sale when it was on sale for $2200. Coupled with a 6% off offer on my credit cards shopping site (when you shop at the Canon website through their affiliate link), it knocked it down to under $2100.

I did the same thing, the R6 I got was on the Black Friday refurbished sale and it was $1099 (the 70-200 was only $1700).

I think I'll wait or at least I hope I can.

I'm expecting the RF version of the 50 mm 1.4, L or not, I don't care, but if it has IS that's the deciding factor to me to get it!.

Sometimes I hate seeing people chase down the latest gear and pricing.

My next purchase?

I can't say. 🤷 Whatever catches my fancy, actually.

I don't plan it per se, I go with my gut and desires.

My last purchase was a (used)Canon angle finder.
Before that, it was a (used)very compact flash unit.
Prior, it was a (used)Sears-branded 18-200mm lens.
Shortly before, it was a (used)Canon 5D Mk IV.

I may be looking at ND or CPL filters next.
Maybe an intervalometer, maybe batteries; I can't say.

Honestly, I don't plan my purchases.
I've got some nice-performing vintage lenses, a couple of modern,
and they give me the range I want. I'm an amateur.
Sure, I've spent a few thousand bucks on the gear I own, but it's been spread out
over the course of many years, and some of the 'cheap' vintage lenses I simply love to use
because I'm an old-skool guy who likes the weight and feel of them while they're in use.
I'm glad I can mount them to and use them with my EOS system, as they've been acquired
on the absolute cheap end of pricing.

I don't long for lighting gear as it's not how I shoot, I don't long for fast lenses as it's not how I shoot,
I'm not longing for a 'Bokeh-Monster' as it's not how I shoot, I'm not after the best ISO as it's not
how I shoot, I don't need the fastest-focus as it's not how I shoot, and I don't need high-FPS
as it's not how I shoot.

I've never planned any of what I have; I've simply gone after what interests me in how it
relates to my interests and desires. What interests me now might not interest me in a few months,
or I may look into something more in-depth in another month. And that can lead me to looking into
PhotoShop tutorials for another way to process my pics, and so forth.

It's never been a goal-driven succession for myself, but an evolution of what I'd like to achieve.

As a non-professional, I do understand why many of you continue to chase the latest technology
and advancements as professionals, but I've found some of the chasing after it to be rather exhausting
from my point of view. I'm perfectly content with my 5D IV, which I lusted for, and my vintage lenses
have allowed me to gain inexpensively what many of you have paid premium prices for, and these suit
my own pursuits of photography perfectly well.

So, putting it into a nutshell for clarity, from my own approach to the interest, I'd like to say I've done
quite a good job of acquiring what I desire on a fairly shoestring budget.

I've no interest in pursuing the latest-greatest $6000 lens, while I still have the capacity of most
professionals, with an effective range of 14mm up to 1000mm in my arsenal.
Again, no disrespect to the pros out there, but I've probably got a fraction of what you've
invested into your own gear, and it's because it suits me and my interests. My interests
or goals are not your own, and vice-versa.

Thinking of getting this Think Tank Mirrorless Mover backpack to upgrade from my old Lowepro 300. I already upgraded my Lowepro 400AW to a Think Tank Backlight 26L a while back. Sometimes I like to take a smaller backpack when we fly, and we will be heading on a plane to Colorado in September. Neither of the Lowepro backpacks have a space for a laptop / tablet.
