Let's share our volleyball pictures. I've learned to hold my framing to capture the post point celebration.

This is a compilation from about 30 frames. I extracted the ball and server (Lily playing for UWF) from them made her transparent (about 50%) except at her high point and placed on the final panel. I went back and reduced the number to increase separation. Fun project.

Here are a few from Southern Oregon University. This game was a first round of the NAIA (small college league) national championships. The SOU team will be going to the tournament later this week.

very cool!

Last time I played volley ball I blew out my ACL.

Bad memories for me. But that was 50 years ago.

It's been about 4 years since I dusted off the camera for volleyball... now I'm shooting my son's team instead of my daughter's.

13U Boys -- first tournament.

All in good humor
Two things - 1. We both remember side out scoring, playing to 21 and who the hell was a libero! 2. It might be a bad memory - but hey, you can remember it and being old as dirt that can't be bad :)

I was just telling a current player about "side out" scoring back in the day, and she couldn't believe it. I always think when current players/fans yell, "side out" if they really know what the significance was as opposed to now.

Thankful to be able to shoot a post season all area all-star showcase last Saturday with some Black Friday equipment upgrades. I will have to chase down some travel/club ball matches to work out all the kinks since our high school season is over.PrepZone_All_Star_231202-2566-Enhanced-NR.jpgPrepZone_All_Star_231202-6615-Enhanced-NR.jpg

Found myself at a volleyball tournament and tried very hard to capture the action (and emotions).
The dynamics are way different then at soccer, which I photograph a lot.
These two were the best of the series.
Aparently the lighting in the venue was 'challenging'.

Things to prepare for a next time:
MFA the 35-350 lens
Experiment with lower shutterspeeds, to get the ISO a bit lower.
(buy a 1Dx3)

...
Part of shooting volleyball is knowing how the arms move (very predictable) and then planning your shots for individual players so you don't have arms across faces. Took me a while to realize that I should be on their left for the serve. Toward the end of last season I realized I didn't have a serving shot of this one girl so I focused on her next turn... and it turned out she serves leftie, so I needed to be by the scoring table! Arrgh.
