Tripod Advice

I have a hex plate on my Manfrotto & don't see a need to change - must say it's very robust!
pretty easy to get camera on & off in the dark also, haven't used Arca type so not sure if that's as easy?
Oh, it's a solid mount, no question about that. At this point though, I don't see the value in buying more hex plates. I'll keep it and use it as a back-up head for my 7D and my aluminum Manfrotto monopod.

FWIW I still enjoy using the old Bogen 3236 bought back in the late 80's. That has seen a range of 35mm, 645 and till today and into the future. Not fun to lug though it has been through the west coast, Japan and other domestic travels. I've liked the Arca mounts coupled with ball heads. I have 4-RRS clamps and one Kirk clamp for my rigs.

If I were into the hunt today I'd go with RRS because the amortized expense is relative to the enjoyment using it is very high. I do understand the initial expense so the suggestions above are worthwhile to look into. Some good value there.

Don't be afraid to go used. I got a used Gitzo and it is fantastic. Far better than any of the cheaper tripods. A tripod is one piece of equipment where it is beneficial to spend a bit to get the best.
I recently went to check out and look at a used Gitzo that had a few options, and was just what I was looking for.

It was so used and abused. I mean, rough would be an understatement. It had not been cared for, and I just couldn’t do it. If it had been cared for, I would own it now, and think it an absolute score.

I know what I want, and it will be a bit pricey. In part because I must pay the tall tax, and I am unwilling to buy a tripod with a center column.

I got mine used from a camera store. So it was in pretty good shape - a few wear scratches but otherwise perfect. You’ll likely pay a bit more than from an individual seller but the store probably has screened out the junk and the abused gear.
