"Trending Content" doesn't seem to match my interests. Can it be turned off?

I'm not a 'typical' or 'conventional' photographer, and find that the new "Trending Content"
does not meet with my personal interests. It's also outdated in some instances.

I have looked into preferences and such, and I've found no way to turn off the sidebar
of 'Trending Content.' Can it be turned off?
I don't find it useful or beneficial so far, just a distraction.

It does not "speak" to me either, but I rarely notice it as it is at the bottom of the page.
Can you just not ignore this feature? It's pretty benign and doesn't require you to accept or reject and prove you're not a ROBOT ;)

I had not noticed the "trending content". In fact I still haven't noticed it. What page does it show up on? I looked at home, forums, what's new. I don't see it at the bottom of the page anywhere.

It shows up for me in the upper-right of the forum list, not at the bottom:

It's in the same place for me, upper right on Forums. It isn't on Home or New Posts at all.

What's trending doesn't help me decide what to look at next. This feature is somewhat distracting but easy enough to ignore. At least it isn't animated!

This just started showing up on the right hand side of my browser today as well. I am hoping there is away to remove it...

It is just on the main forum list page, right? Once you enter one of the forums, it doesn't show up any more.

It is here:

But not here:

I don't view the forums as your screenshots show, so it may be different for me.

At any rate, it's reduced the width of my view, and it's not been pertinent to my own interests, or even accurate, yet.
My selected viewpoint has been 'A Familiar Look'.

Craig, "A Familiar Look" is just a style. I switched to it and the basic components are identically placed. I get the trending list on the main forums page but not when I drill down into the forums themselves.

It shows up on the main forums page:

But not when I drill down into any of the forums:

That's fine Sam, but my question was "can I turn it off?"

It seems to be of no interest to me thus far, as I'm not active in those discussions.
I've been there a few times, maybe made some comments, but that alone doesn't
convey my photographic interests.

I've just wondered why it's suddenly there, while it isn't of my interests.

It isn't customized for any one person's interests like targeted advertising. I see the same threads that are in Sam's screenshot just above your post.

The reason to put something in that spot at all was stated in Forum Talk when the feature was planned. Filling the space pushes what was on the right a little leftward to shrink the big space in the middle. I don't know what the other choices to put there were. You might prefer to have a Cartoon of the Day--I would--but we can't expect the mods to become cartoonists.

Gotcha. Let me play around with it to see. I think there is limited changes possible for users - a lot of the forum settings are set up standard for everyone. That being said, I'll look into it. I hear what you are saying - it would be nice to customize it or even get rid of it if it doesn't float your boat.

I'm just trying to get familiar with the forum again and don't know if it was voted on or not. It can definitely be removed in general though.

OK... dug into it and it was introduced into the latest Xenforo release. For what it is worth, the Xenforo boffins see it as "as a precursor to grander improvements to content discovery in general in the future," for what it is worth.

They do say that the widget can be moved around - it is currently placed in the forum list page as we know. Would be better on the home page? I don't think we want it further down the tree in the individual forum pages, since the whole idea is to point out the "hot" threads, which you probably don't care about if you are already into one of the forums. We can get more inputs from others to see if we want to make any changes.

If you want to read more about it, see:

It's not that big of a deal for me and pretty easy to ignore, it just grabs threads from the new post list. I have a link set to enter the site on the New Posts page in Firefox so it's rarely seen.
