I noticed that we can add tags to threads. So I did that, in the Patterns thread. But I don't actually know what they are for or what they do. Searching online didn't clarify it. So, what are thread tags for?

Hey Ed. Tags are a great way to find things. First, a tag itself is a type of link. If you click on it, you get a list of other threads with the same tag. But more importantly, you can search tags with the forum’s search tool. Go to advanced search and choose “search tags.” Because tags usually are key words they are great for quickly finding the kind of content you’re looking for.

And by the way, members can add tags to a thread even if they are not the thread starter. I know as ex-POTN’ers we are not used to tags and most people overlook them but they’re really very handy. So add a tag when a thread doesn’t have any tags or does have them but you think it needs an additional one.

Thanks, very useful.

Are wildcard characters allowed in tags? For instance repeat* to cover repeat, repeated and repeating?

That’s a good question, Ed. Since I had no idea, I tested it out and no, wildcards don’t seem to work, so you will need to search for the exact term.

I’ve put this on my to-do list as I’m sure someone found a way to use wildcards. Maybe there’s an add-on.

Does it work?
I tried adding the tag LesterLikes to this thread.
The SW confirmed saving the changes but there is no visible effect.

What happens when everybody tags the same thread with their own tag? No offense, Lester, but I don't care if you like this thread.

That is obviously not what tags are for. A tag should be a key word from the thread’s content. And not reflect likes or dislikes of the person that places the tag. I have removed Lester’s tag, which was just a test.
