Sparrows of Rentenaar Road

[West Coast Birder]

Rentenaar Road on Sauvie Island in Portland, Oregon is a great place for sparrows in winter, especially those in Zonotrichia. The area is full of Nootka rose and other bushes that the sparrows love.

Here are a few that I photographed a couple of weeks ago, some common and one not so.

And finally, the rarity. A field sparrow which is not usually seen out West. The bird was playing hard to get and unfortunately, I was unable to get a shot with the bird in perfect profile.

The ones you really want never cooperate . I like the Golden-crowns. We have a few here in the winter and I’m always looking through flocks of White-crowned trying to find some.
