A January trip to Athens, very lucky with the weather, 17-18C and shirt sleeves. Obviously this only brushes the surface of what there is to see and do.

Acropolis of Athens

Climbing up to the Propylaia which is the classical Greek Doric building complex that functioned as the monumental ceremonial gateway to the Acropolis of Athens. Built between 437 and 432 BC as a part of the Periklean Building Program.

Located on the hill of Nymphs in the historic area of Thissio, right across the Acropolis, the National Observatory of Athens overlooks the Ancient Agora.

The Theatre of Dionysus (or Theatre of Dionysos)is an ancient Greek theatre in Athens. It is built on the south slope of the Acropolis hill. The first orchestra terrace was constructed on the site around the mid- to late-sixth century BC. The theatre reached its fullest extent in the fourth century BC.

Church of Panagia Kapnikarea Greek Orthodox church and one of the oldest churches in Athens. It is estimated that the church was built some time in the 11th century, perhaps around 1050.
Inside is dark and mysterious, even the non-religious should feel the spiritual space; unfortunately this is spilt slightly by the loud music from surrounding shops in this bury square.

The Academy of Athens is Greece's national academy, and the highest research establishment in the country. It was established in 1926, with its founding principle tracing back to the historical Academy of Plato.
The Greek neo-classical sculptor Leonidas Drosis sculpted the principle multi-figure pediment sculpture, on the theme of the birth of Athena, based on a design by painter Carl Rahl.
Drosis is also responsible for the figures of Athena and Apollo with lyre on the Academy's flanking pillars, and the seated marble figures of Plato and Socrates, which were executed "by the Italian sculptor Piccarelli"

I visited Athens as part of a Med cruise some 25 years ago, only spending three days in Athens. I am deeply impressed by what you saw and photographed during your time there, resulting in an outstanding series.:row:

Thanks so much for your kind comments, it is very appreciated.

The Greek people are very warm, friendly and helpful. Service and quality everywhere was exhalant and good value. So I can thoroughly recommend a trip.

We were there for 3 whole days arriving at 1 am in the morning and leaving at about midday on the 4th day which is only enough for a quick look around. A major regret is nor managing an excursion to Delphi.
