Sunrise over Kunashiri as seen from Rausu on the east side of the Shiretoko peninsula in northern Hokkaido, Japan. Kunashiri is the southermost of the Kuril islands, part of Russia but claimed by Japan. It lies less than 10 miles from Hokkaido and used to be a Japanese possession until after WWII when the Russians annexed it.
