"Sakurajima" - one of the world's most active volcanos (only 2.3km from my city!)

Tokyo for four nights and Kyoto for four nights as well.
Bullet Train to and from. A train lover, I am really looking forward to the “ride”.
Starting to pack up tomorrow with the new gear and put through the paces.
Will leave room for the MeFOTO Globetrotter CF Tripod on Large Away Suitcase, just in case I can head out one day or night.
Everyone I know who has been to your “place” has fallen in love with it and the people.

A shot taken from the south fishing pier next to the Skyway Bridge in St. Pete, FL. this was taken during the golden hour as a cargo ship was passing underneath. The lights of the bridge came on just minutes before I snapped this shot.
the following shots were taken a little later when the lots were more visible. They can change the color of the lights (spent over 1 m on them) so the bridge looks different each time I cross it at night.

Sounds like a great trip...
...but you've chosen a tricky season.

The forecast for Tokyo is torrential rain on Saturday & Sunday, then cloudy Mon->Wed, but with 40% chance of torrential rain!
Which means, they're guessing.

Kyoto is the same, but with flood warnings on top. 😲

Make sure your gear will be ok in the rain. Oh, and the humidity - down where I am, we're expecting >90% humidity for the next few days, so all the weather forecasts include warnings to drink plenty of fluids! 🥤

Anyway, you'll LOVE the bullet train, and no doubt be blown away by the culture and people.

Let me know if you need any help or hints or anything.
😁👍

Oh dear...
She's at it again, today.
At least three big eruptions, but I only had time to capture the start of this one.

Low clouds around the volcano meant that the ash-cloud seemed to come out of nowhere.

Cheers for now,
Simon

From under a big bridge today - May 28th - and she's finally calmed down.
For now...

She's cloaked in misty rain now...

Erupting?
Momentarily quiet?
I've no idea.

Cheers for now,
Simon

She's still calm.
18th June 2025.
I've put this in the "mountains" thread, but she's so special, a fresh edit in B&W needs to go here too.⛰️

July 20th, and she's erupting again after the above image showed some calm.

But with strong winds, the ash plume is, more often than not, being blown flat. And north-west, slightly away from me and the city. 😊👍

Weird weather today gave me this shot...

...and it made me ponder on what the people living around the bay 6,000 years ago would've thought about Sakurajima. 🤔

Cheers for now,
Simon

From the very edge of the Satsuma Peninsula, a stone's throw from the waters dividing the city from "our" volcano...

October 8th 2025, with typhoon #22 pulling some darkness towards her currently quiet southern peak.

Does she care?
I think not.
😆

Cheers for now,
Simon

Thanks Nick. 😄
But thankfully, Typhoon #22 has moved north...
...next, it'll be Typhoon #23 everyone will be worried about. 😱

Looks like Mother Nature has been busy there. I was in Japan in early August when Typhoon 9 came through. 14 typhoons in 2 months….

That's right, Sam. 😱

But thankfully, typhoons are given a number irrespective of their likely path.

"Touch wood", none hit Kagoshima this season.
🍀

Cheers for now, mate.
Simon 🤩👍

En route into the city, just as the sun was setting.

And she's behaving herself at the moment. 🧐

But for how long, I wonder. 🫣

Cheers for now,
