Hi guys,
I have some questions about photography that I would like to ask for my course work project:

I am attempting to find a potential gap in the market for a product with the context of photography.
If it helps, think about the questions from the point of view of your own style of photography as there isn't a particular focus at this point of development.

-Are there any problems you encounter when trying to do a photoshoot? i.e. the weather (I'm trying to focus more on the physical side, less so on the electronic).
-Have you thought of any ways that you would or have fixed the issues?
-Have you needed to improvise a solution for any problems? If so what for?
-Has your ability to take photos been limited due to any of these issues? If so what were they; how?

I’m thankful for any input.

Cheers,
Will

You're still being as vague as you were on the other forum.

Or simply a very open question. These sorts of questions are common when marketing people talk to customers. The answers, such as the telephoto lens is too heavy when I shoot wildlife, can lead to new lenses. My example question is hypothetical, and a hypothetical product would be a new lens that with new manufacturing techniques to make lenses that correct chromatic aberration by adding materials to change the refractive index across the lens when the glass blank is made. Fewer elements means less weight.

What other forum?

Many "pain points" will be constrained by physics. I'm sure that people would like smaller reflectors/diffusers for flash that are harder for the wind to blow over, to cover your outdoor shooting example. But I don't see how they could be made smaller while still producing the desired effects. It's still worth people replying because engineers sometimes find a away around the problem.

I'd like a tripod head that is more sturdy. They exist, but are very expensive. I want it to hold a star tracker device. I'll probably make my own.

A) this seems unnecessarily confrontational, why?
B) which forum is this exactly?

Please accept my apologies.

I still think the OP needs to be more specific about what it is that he is trying to do. If he had said that he wants to design a “gimbal” then at least you can pass on your experiences of using one and say how you think the product could be improved.

As for the other forum, the OP knows what I am talking about. And it was in fact the other forum that suggested the gimbal, which he seemed to like.

I'd like to know about other forums. As you mentioned it publicly, rather than in a private message, it is understandable that people would be interested. If it is a secret, like the Illuminati Forum, perhaps there shouldn't be allusions that it exists :)

Thanks for that.

I think the OP is looking for ideas. Once he has these then he can drill down where needed.

Will, what's the other forum?

OK, I'll play.

It sounds like you're looking a topic for a research project. You think of a product and track it through development, manufacturing and marketing. Am I right?

You probably want to stay away from actual camera gear. There's too much engineering and too much custom stuff for a small, third-party manufacturer. If you look at the photography industry, the only profitable small players make bags and straps. You might throw in filter makers too. Those are things where there's no one right way, so if you have a good idea, you can get it to market.

I worked at newspapers in the '90s and wore a photo vest quite a bit, especially for sports. I still have a Domke Photogs vest that fits me. But like all Domke stuff, it never really made the transition to digital. SLR gear, especially lenses, were quite a bit smaller than DSLR and Mirrorless stuff.

For me, today, 2 bodies and 2 lenses are a full bag, as long as I don't carry the bag. I don't think I've seen anybody making a modern vest. The beauty of a vest is that when it's empty it just lies there flat. A bag is the same size empty or full. A vest might be a good solution when working with the main gear out as well as carrying a little spare gear.

I don't know if I'd buy one of those. I'd consider it. I'd research it. Honestly, I'd probably wait a couple of years and buy a used one from a guy my size who never wore his, for 30% of retail. But hey, we're all part of the economy.

Can you please clarify the what the assignment was? What sources are you expected to use? Were you asked to use a survey of other photographers?

The thing is, this is to help figure out what I'm trying to do. I need to show that I have a range of Issues that other people have run into and the proof being screenshots of the posts.

The assignment is to figure out an issue in a given context(photography) and then design and build a product prototype based on the answers given by others + my own research. There aren't any specific sources that I need to use.

Are there a Knights Templar, Opus Dei, and Free Mason forums too?

As for the original question, when shooting race finishes, there are times the runners bunch up and one cannot get a clear shot of all of them. I learned that the solution is to get up on a step ladder.

Also, getting down low to take focus-stacked shots of mushrooms is a challenge for creaky old bones. I don't believe there's a solution, other than perhaps a time machine.

All right, then, here's an issue that's often raised on this forum. As people pass from middle age into elderhood, they lose muscle mass, on average. Some also develop arthritis and other conditions that limit their physical ability. Many photographers here are old enough to have retired. Without jobs, they have more time to go out shooting than those still employed can spare. So we see complaints, especially from ones who specialize in nature (wildlife, remote landscapes, etc.), that they're troubled by the size and weight of the advanced gear they used to carry and handle comfortably. Design and build something to make it easier to hike with heavy cameras and lenses and to switch items of equipment around when out in the field. The gear subforums would be a good place to find out what people use now and what features they wish for.
