Question on Canon 1D (CCD, 4mp, original 1D from 2001)

So, I shot with the original 1D from circa 2003 to 2007, mostly macrophotography of Insects and Arachnids. The original 1D didn't save in .CR format (that came with the first set of CMOS cameras from Canon), but instead, the file extension was .tif. I have a bunch of images that I'd like to re-process, including using DXO to denoise, especially important since the 1D was a very noisy camera by modern standards. DXO doesn't (and refuses) to support the original 1D, I suspect cos of the CCD sensor, which is pretty horrible on their part, but it is what it is. Lightroom Classic will only really work with RAW files (or DNGs), and whilst I haven't tested it yet, I suspect that importing any of these older 1D files will have Lightroom see them as non-RAW files. I don't really want to use Canon DPP, since it is vastly inferior. I don't really want to denoise with Topaz Denoise AI either, since it's also (imho) vastly inferior to DXO Pure Raw. I had hoped to maintain my Lightroom Classic ==> DXO ==> Photoshop processing workflow, employing new workflow techniques that I have learnt in the past 3 or 4 years.

I did some checking online, and there were responses saying that Adobe DNG convertor will convert TIFF to DNG, but that doesn't seem to be the case, it fails with no supported camera RAW files.

So am I pretty much screwed and stuck to editing with DPP and then Photoshop with limited adjustments?

I know it's an older camera, and the images are now old, and what many would say "inferior" as they are only 4mp, but I really like some of my older macro images, and the colour science from the CCD sensor on the 1D is unmatched by any CMOS camera from Canon imho. This is not just me saying this, but several pro photographers who used the 1D and also believe it has better colour science due to the CCD sensor that was used being superior to the CMOS technology. edit: this would also enable me to upscale images to a larger file size using AI tech (yes, I know it's not perfect, and no, I'm not aiming to submit to competitions, just for my personal enjoyment).

Back in the day I used DPP and Neat Image for NR and Photoshop for editing, employing Neat Image as the last step in my processing workflow. I now much prefer to employ NR as my first step in my workflow as I believe it results in better image quality.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Dave

I downloaded a 1D Tiff file from rawsamples.ch
On my MacBook Pro (2019) running OSX Tahoe I can open the TIFF file with Preview (double click the file) and then export it to a .png
rapidRAW had no trouble opening the png.
If no one beats me to it I will try the same conversion on my Microsoft Windows laptop.

I noticed that some editors revert back to the 200x170 pixel preview which is embedded in the tiff file and not use the 2464x1648 image.

I don't want to export to .png - that's typically an 8 bit file type, not desirable (and it's not a RAW format).

Thank you for the rawsamples.ch website though. I downloaded the test RAW file and was able to successfully export it to DNG format using the Adobe DNG convertor. That's the good news.

The bad news is that DXO Pure RAW v2 (and any other version for that matter) will NOT process the RAW or DNG. It comes up with either it's already been denoised, or the file is corrupted. I tried both the DXO module within Lightroom Classic, and the standalone DXO application.

VERY disappointing on DXO's part. I'm going to have to use Topaz Denoise AI (first converting to DNG format).

I just used the standalone Topaze Denoise AI app (I've only ever used it as a Photoshop plugin before) and it worked without issue and did a good job of denoising the file, even though it's at low ISO and not particularly noisy. I was able to import this into Lightroom Classic and process the file as a RAW file, so all is good.

Many thanks for your reply post, it pointed me in the right direction.

I think this will enable some really good improvements to older 1D images, especially since these original RAW files were processed in Canon's DPP back in the day, which had very limited options and functionality vs modern RAW processing software. Now I need to find my original 1D files and go through which files I want to work on. Fun, fun and thrice fun!

Cheers,

Dave

I checked again in Preview. Upon export I can choose between 8 bits/channel and 16 bits/channel.

Came across this site:
https://pixellize.com/tiff-to-raw-converter
and converted the tiff to raw.
Affinity (yes the recent free version) was able to load this raw file showing it as RGBA/8 - sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (whatever that means).

Examined the tif file with:
https://framebird.io/exif-metadata-viewer/tiff
And this viewer shows a "bits per sample" of 8.8.8, and more interesting information such as ISO 200 and f/7.1 shot at 1/500 at 70mm.

Hope this helps.
