Giant Tortoises at the Darwin Research Center on Santa Cruz. These are part of a breeding program to eventually repopulate the island Floreana. The native species there was thought to be extinct since the 1850s, but few years ago hybrids with Floreana DNA were found on Isabella. There's a very good article about them in National Geographic Magazine.

Frill-necked Lizard, Chlamydosaurus kingii, near Kangaroo Flats, south of Darwin, October 2025. When they get scared they run (hilariously, on their hind legs) for the nearest tree and pretend to be part of its trunk. They move around to be on the opposite side from the threat (or person looking for them). This cunning plan comes a bit unstuck when there are two observers, one on either side of the tree, as then they can't hide. This is when they usually bail out and bolt for the safety of the tree top.20251011_LitchfieldTour_Pippan_5-1.jpg
