Under the pier, Walton-On-The-Naze, Essex, A popular Essex seaside town, "Naze" derives from old English 'næss' "ness, prenomitory, headland". In 1722 Daniel Defoe mentions the town calling it "Walton, under the Nase". That old town of Walton he mentions then lying beside the tall headland is now 9 miles out and under the sea. The Naze itself is suffering erosion at an alarming pace losing 2 metres every year, more now since the current rate has increased due to the unusual weather systems now becoming more frequent. Anyway, I digress.....
