What kind of creature is that? Bear? Mongoose? Are there even any mongooses in Japan? Otter?
That is a Tenuki a Japanese Racoon dog also known as Bake-danuki.
A mischievous fellow. There is a statue of one at my local sushi restaurant.
He is also a character in a Tom Robbins book

Yikes, that looks a lot closer than some of the other shots you have shared where it looks like there is a large-ish body of water in the middle.

Yep. Honestly.
"While driving".
I found this remarkable, architect's design-idea for a home today, up on a hillside.
Unfortunately, it wasn't open.
But with treated wood being the main material, plus steel girders here-and-there, it looked like a prefect blend of traditional + modern.
