Post your Bird Portraits

Finally pulled the finger out and checked my images from ~2 weeks ago. Spent nearly 2 hours driving North to a new location and then a 50 minute walk to the water's edge. Apparently, the location is a hot spot for raptors, with Black Falcon, Black Shouldered Kite, Spotted Harrier and Whistling Kites all spotted here. I left home late (had to work beforehand). It was overcast and threatening rain, and I probably shouldn't have went, but glad I did. I got to the water's edge, very tired as the track was grassy, very wet and soft and up/downhill, which is not good for me due to lower back issues. But, I prevailed. And this MAGNIFICENT Black Shouldered Kite graced me with their presence. And flew pretty close too, completely uncaring about my visible presence, which is unusual for this species.

Those talons are RAZOR sharp. It was hovering over the grasses, working the fields for a very late dinner. It did catch something, but I couldn't tell what it was as it was further away from me at that point of time.

Please note that it was heavily overcast and threatening rain, and not far from dusk too. So light was quite limited. My old 500mm prime is struggling with AF on BIFs, but this shot came out very well imho, and very sharp.

A little bit of effort in Lightroom and Photoshop masking and editing to bring out the best in the image.

@Graham121 and @Pippan - what do you think this is? It's either a juvenile Peregrine Falcon or an Australian Hobby. It was quite a way off, so this is a very heavy crop, and not far of dusk, so lighting wasn't great. It came out of nowhere, flying very fast, did a loop and a half for me and then disappeared. I'm leaning towards Australian Hobby (and marked it as that in eBird at the time of taking the image), as it doesn't look quite bulky/heavy built enough from the breast up to be a Peregrine Falcon imho. The wings were slender though, and bent at the shoulders, looking much more like the Australian Hobby than a Peregrine Falcon which is a bit bulkier in the wings imho. This is the best shot I managed, I didn't take any photos of it with the wings spread.

I'm curious to see what you think it is.

edit: I know a Peregrine Falcon was spotted about 1KM due East of this location 2 months ago. It could be a juvenile Peregrine Falcon, but with the breast streaks being horizontal rather than vertical, I don't think so.

Interesting Dave. Rightly or wrongly I am going juvenile Peregrine based on these two images I took over the summer, but that is based only on these particular birds
The top is a heavily cropped image of this season's pair of local peregrines playing together almost too far away for anything useful whislt the bottom is one of the local young Hobbies giving me a close in fly-by.
PS monitor is/was calibrated but that was a while ago, maybe time to redo.

Hi Dave, my first thought was hobby (lack of yellow around eye and legs, and shape of hood) but the more I looked into the less sure I became, so I'm not much help.
