An unexpected guest shows up at the feeder station this afternoon having a nice Thanksgiving day feast, and allowing me to try a few snaps. A downy woodpecker.

Was actually looking at the chickadees on the other side of the hook when this little fella poked his head out from the back of the suet :) so tried to sneak my way around for a slightly better angle

Such a colorful shot! Downys are always a nice treat! We get inundated by downys, hairys (less frequently), and Northern Flickers when it gets cold and the suet is plentiful. I've seen a couple of pileated woodpeckers visit but they are much more shy and prefer to stay in the larger trees behind my property.
