Opinion please: What finish on print?

#1 is a good candidate for metal
#2 I actually think canvas would be my first choice with metal and some sort of non-glossy matte finish 2nd.

What finish depends. If they are for you, where will they be displayed, and how much sun will hit them? I've got a bunch of metal prints throughout my house, and glossy is my least used finish for metal. The glare from lights or sun on metal drives me bonkers. If they are not for you, go glossy as people like shiny things. If printed paper, then glossy for both.

Interesting and informative replies, thanks!

Would hang with NO natural bright light.

For the first one I have to go with metal as well. With the image saturation, vibrant colors, and sharpness would best be displayed on metal. It's almost what it was made for. :-) The second I'm leaning toward canvas. The colors are just as vibrant, but as the plane of focus is close with the mountains and trees in the back being a tad OOF, the texture of the canvas would benefit the image.

Thanks everyone. I like your ideas of metal for the first, canvas for the second.

Phil,

Explain your recommendation to me like I’m a noob (well, I am in this regard :giggle:). How does one decide?
Sorry missed your post @West Coast Birder

I don’t know the answer. I just tried a couple of my Africa images in metal with gloss and liked the result. I think some of those dramatic sunset images would lend itself to that too.

Don’t know that there is a one size fits all. Probably some trial and error.

I'd say if your photo has a lot of details and/or color a glossy metal print might be a good choice. It will look very sharp and the colors will be nicely saturated and bright.

A canvas print is better for photos with less detail. It gives a painterly look to your photo and in my experience the texture lessens details. Colors are not as bright or saturated.

Both types of prints can look very good.

Maybe a little late but I think the bright parts in the reflection and clouds, plus the vibrant colors, scream for a metal print to capture it best.

Gloss metal for sure, make sure you have the file size for the print size you want- metal prints want more than paper prints!

I imagine that will "pop" if you have it on metal prints. I have seen one photographer and his work in Sedona, Az... the pics are vibrant, realistic, and alive.

A great alternative to metal is Pearl finish. A bit less reflective than metal, but in a good way...

How is the print to be displayed? Any glazing in mind? I tend to prefer pearl/metallic prints (Fuji Digital Pearl or at the time Kodak Metallic Endura) when an image has such vibrant colors. I have them bare print to framed behind a glazing and face mount acrylics.

Canvas is nice too. On my canavs prints instead of having the image bleed over I'd take the dominant theme color and use that as the edge border at 3/4"-1". Gives it some depth from the wall with color.

One of those get them done in all the ways you like $ permitting.

Late to the party here.

I am a great fan of glossy prints especially ones that show reflections. The gloss really brings out that aspect of an image. Pearl is a good second choice and can go a long way towards hiding noise or grain.

I have several images of that spring, but none in the evening(?). The panorama that I printed was on a glossy stretched canvas (Red River Paper), but I do my own printing. It is inside and there is no direct sunlight on it. I like the metal finish, but am always leery of a scratch, which is why I print something I can always reprint later. I also like the "metallic" paper, which gives a pseudo metallic look, without the high cost of metal. My two cents.
