Enjoying the forum, but one slight irritation is the notification list.

Is it possible to change it (or have on option) to clear viewed notification?

I'm afraid not, Lester. The viewed topics linger in there until they are replaced by new ones. And the viewed ones stay for 7 days. I can set that to just 1 day but that is the minimum. You could maybe change your preferences to exclude some categories of alerts, so you have more oversight?

On every forum I tried out (and there were a few), notifications worked the same, so I also don't think there's an addon for it. We would have to write the code for it ourselves.

Ok thanks.

I just find it easy to miss things - in fact I missed this reply!

At they show as read once viewed, I can get used to that.

If you look carefully at the notifications, the unread ones are a slightly different color. When read or responses to, they change. Not sure if it works that was in all color schemes but I tried two and it did.

Yes that was what I was implying above.
I am getting used to it.

Hmm.. maybe I have to take that back. Paying a bit more attention, it might not work exactly that way. I just had 4 notifications, I clicked on the first one, and all 4 went lighter. Will have to pay close attention when new notifications come in.

I may be wrong, but when that happend to me it was multiple likes on the same post; need to watch carefully next time to test that assumption.

I'm watching as well. You got me curious. :)

I always start at the bottom and work my way up.

Oh, and have you tried clicking on Show All? That brings you to a nice page...

EDIT #3: I'm in Classy style. It's not done but I like it the best, so okay. And this is what I see. The visited ones are white. The others are grey. Works for me.

Ok, it seems to clear the unread marker if the posts are in the thread or the same page.

That explains missing a few things.

Another little thing is the red alert mark disappears on first look even if you don't press any alearts.
Then when I touched outside alert list to close it and go back in it had marked the top four alerts as read.

I don't know if the behaviour is reproducible.

I think these are called "features" by software engineers....

I have little blue dots, you touch these and it sets it back to unread status.

I am finding some odd behaviour, see previous message.

Again this morning, looked at the first alert and all the rest got set to read.

This is on an iPhone, l'll check what my windows 10 box does.

Yeah, it is a bit of a flawed system.
Have you tried clicking on Show All (at the bottom)?
Oh yes I did try that. Need to check the behaviour there also, may be different.

Also tried one of the other profiles Classy+ I think; the system went a bit wobbly and refused to show any more alerts. So I went back to default.

OK on the Win10 box at present, same behaviour as the iPhone, clicked on the notification for this thread (3rd down, two above were marked unread) checking back it has cleared the two above also.

Does mean it is easy to miss stuff.

Is the server software open source or is it just what it is?

Does not mean I think the forum is not an excellent effort, just noting oddities, I assume you want to collect bug reports?

Classy+? There is only Classy, still very much a work in progress. Did you maybe mean Shades of Grey+? The + sign indicates larger font.

Not open source, Lester. It is XenForo.
Oh yes, thanks for correcting the old brain.

Looking at XenForo website I see they have a user form and support page.

Do they actually collect bug reports?
ie is there any point is FoP membership reporting bugs or can you not do anything with them?

@Lester Wareham , the alerts are a source of annoyance for me as well. Say, you have 4 listed likes to a certain thread but different posts in that thread. Click on one, they all show read. I pretty much quit looking at the alerts and maybe should turn them off completely. I likely wouldn't miss any more than I do now. As far as marking which to use and which not, that isn't a simple undertaking eiither. Most of us don't know what behavior will actually result from those choices.

They don't annoy me. When I see for example four new alerts I go through the four one by one and ignore the rest. Not sure why this is such an annoyance to some. ⁉️

It is worse than that Bill.

I had it mark alerts from other threads as read as well.

I have tried opening the first or last unread alert with similar behaviour.

The behaviour is not too consistent TBH, I am not sure what the internal rules are.

The coding must be a bit unnecessary labyrinthine for it to behave this way. How simple can it be, have a list and set the status as read when read and leave the others alone.

I suspect the coder has tried to implement an algorithm that marks all alerts for the the same message as read (useful behaviour), but have messed up the indirection to one list or another so thing gets in a mess.
