A search turns up several older threads but not the one I was thinking off. Maybe Paul Iddon or BasAndrews.

Not tried myself, it is on the "try when have time" list.
Thoughts: traditional flash but modern LED touches may be an alternative.
UV flashlight might help spot subjects

Unfortunately I had enough trouble with shots in the daytime, so I had nothing useful ref night shoots.
I'm afraid traditional flash is still the king. Led works fine for modeling light, but is usually too weak to be the main light. That depends on magnification, though. At higher magnifications a shorter time is needed to prevent shake and that tips the balance even more towards the flash.
