This is my photographic anniversary. I took up this hobby five years ago this week, on the cusp of my retirement.

The company I worked for shuts down between Christmas and the New Year. I used to go to eastern Washington to fish over the break. I went there in 2019 to see if I could figure out how to work my newfangled DSLR. A month later I retired, and a month or so after that, Covid lockdowns. That's how I got started and these are from that first trip.

Congrats on the anniversary! It’s a fun hobby for sure. Any specific plans for 2025?
Thanks. I'm sitting here nursing a sore back waiting for it to stop raining, even for a little bit. I've been going through some old stuff and putting 2024 to bed in various places. It's been raining a lot.

I just ordered a refurb R10. I've been telling myself I need to spend more time in cities. I like my APS-C cameras for that, among other things. Those shots above were made with an 80D. The R10 promises an extra level of discretion in crowds. Might help me blend in like a tourist. We'll see.

Other than that, I plan to keep doing what I've been doing; check the weather, drive to a place and see what's out there that day. Try to come back with shots.

I have an 80D also and for the life of me, cannot figure out how to set it for B&W photography. Manual is cryptic when trying to describe how to configure the settings.

Any advice here?

BTW, outstanding photos!

I’m with Ken. Just shoot and then convert to B&W in post. You shouldn’t need to do any hardware modifications unless you want to change the sensitivity of the sensor, like trying to do infrared photography.

Crazy, never thought to do that. I don't have any photo editing software (photoshop, etc.) nor do I shoot in RAW (not yet anyway). But I can convert to B&W by opening in "Photos" on my Windows 10 PC and editing to B&W. Never knew that before, learn something new everyday. My Canon XS720 HS pocket camera has a B&W setting in one of the menus and works very well.

Here are a couple of photos in color and B&W (edited in "Photos"). This is a coyote that is hanging around in our lower pasture and seems to be "casing" our place (we have some farm animals that I think he is interested in but probably can't get to them for several reasons).

Thanks!

The "Monochrome" picture style ( https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/ART164652 ) shoots B/W. The disadvantage is that if you shoot JPEG only you have no color image.

That is perfect, thank you! This article explains the settings much better (and clearer) than the manual.

I am constantly amazed at the sophistication and complexity of the Canon 80D. This is my first serious Canon camera body (I had a simple XSi before) and there are hundreds of things to discover and experiment with. Since I'm retired, I can do that...
