C-54 Skymaster, this last surviving one of its type in Europe is undergoing restoration to flight at North Weald airfield in Essex UK. This was taken in one of the rare times it is pulled out into the open for photographs. Two of these were flown in to the airfield to take part in a planned film about the Berlin airlift, the film fell through and both were left more or less abandoned for about ten years or so. One has since been cut up for scrap and parts, this one lingers on in the hands of a preservation group

This is the Bf 109E Werknummer 3579 that Hans Joachim-Marseille, the Ace from the Luftwaffes North African campaign flew on his first combat mission in 1940. It was damaged in combat with a Spitfire during the Battle Of Britain with the then almost unknown Jochim as its pilot . It bellied in on the beach near Calais-Marck airfield in France . After subsequent recovery and repair in Antwerp by a Luftwaffe repair unit, the plane was then issued to JG77 operating out of Alakutii, Russia.
The plane was once more damaged in combat and repaired again, this time in Norway, before being returned to the Russian Front. In August of 1942 with LT Kurt Hammel at the controls, 3579 was forced down near the FLOT (Forward Line of Troops) where it was abandoned. The wreck was recovered in the Summer of 1992 by the Russian Aircraft Recovery Group and moved to Moscow. It was then purchased by an American company who rebuilt it back into flying condition. In 2014 the plane was sold and moved to its current location at Biggin Hill Aerodrome in Kent.

Photographed on my phone during a visit to this collection of flyable converted 2 seat Spitires. This rarely flown, almost original Me109 is now restored to its original Battle of Britain markings and paint scheme.
