Can someone clarify how to send a private message to another forum member? When I click on a user's name, I only see options for "follow," "ignore," and "market feedback," but no option to send a PM. Is there something I’m overlooking?

I accidentally created three topics on the same subject. Could the admins please remove two of them?

We have set PM ability to require 25 posts. This is to place the effort bar high enough to deter spammers. Just make 6 more posts and you’ll be there!

Hmm...I tried to send @argar a pm with instructions. I was able to compose the message, but I got a message saying that I didn't have enough mojo yet to send a pm. OTOH, I was able to respond to a PM someone else sent me. I have 46 posts at the moment, so something seems off. Is there also a minimum membership elapsed time requirement?

I sent one to @West Coast Birder a little while ago and it seemed to go OK. I think I might know what the problem was--I just leave a FOP tab open on my browser, so I'm not signing in every day. I'm guessing the software calculates my privileges at signon and does not update them in real time. Not to worry--I was an admin on Dgrin with vBulletin and Vanilla, so I'm familiar with many of the quirks. And I'm all in favor of anti-spammer measures.

Hello, Both members need to have 25+ posts to be able to send DM. If one does not meet the requirement, neither can communicate.

Sorry for the inconvenient.

Interestingly, when I joined the forum from POTN back in 2023 and 2024, I was able to send PMs :)
Yeah, unfortunately we had to change the rules due to a significant increase in nuisance PMs. This way, hopefully the irritation of having to make 25 posts to send a PM will deter all but the most persistent of spammers. :)

...... this was something new and we are working on the notice. sorry we are behind on it :ninja:

Other forums enforce similar rules, which makes sense and likely keeps at least some spammers away

Alright, 25 posts in and I still can't find the sent PM option. 🧐

When I was a moderator in another forum, long time ago, we had a limit (I think 10 posts) before one could send a PM. HOWEVER, another forum member could send the newbie a PM and he would receive it. Sorry I can't remember if the newbie could then reply or he still had to wait.

We figured that if a new member had a general question for the mods, they can post. We are usually monitoring the new threads menu and one of usually sees it right away. They also have a choice to report their own post to the mods and it will get their attention right away. And if something is private, they can always use the Contact Us link at the bottom of the home page and it will send an email to the Forum email account. And finally, if they really wanted to contact another person, all they have to do is go post a dozen photos and reply to a dozen more posts made by others. That’s a pretty low bar for a genuine member, I think, although probably enough to deter a spammer. 😉
