The word hasn't spread far enough at POTN. Yesterday, when a member of the older photographers' thread lamented the impending closure of POTN, I posted there to call attention to our thread in Forum Talk. The OP had had no idea.

Other POTNers have similarly got the news only recently. My signature has alerted some, but posting in one thread after another for that purpose would amount to spamming the board. Annoying Pekka is to be avoided. All we have over there is one thread in Forum Talk. Members don't necessarily keep up with Forum Talk.

Any ideas for getting lifeboats to these people?

As soon as we go live, I suggest that, all of us who are still posting on POTN should reveal the FOP link and suggest they should register here and post on mirror threads that have already been set up for them
Please say whether this is an acceptable strategy.

Would it make sense to ask Pekka to broadcast the news to all POTNers, something like "The King is dead, long live the Queen" and point to the new site?
I definitely think this is the best idea so far

I’m not sure he is interested or happy about the activity he is seeing on POTN.
I think a few folks have been a bit over enthusiastic about FoP in inappropriate posts and places
I’ve seen him sending PMs to some people 🤷‍♂️

That's unfortunate. :( Last thing I would hope to see is Pekka getting annoyed after all he's done for POTN but at the same time I'd think he'd understand that there would be a shift once he announced POTN's closure.

It’s a thin line. I think he deserves a bit more respect.]
I think posting a victory celebration in his IMPORTANT MESSAGE thread is not respectful

Hey, I'm happy that this exists, but let’s respect how we got here. All the effort and time that Pekka did for something so special. True and sad that it couldn’t be moved forward. We have something new and special, let’s not dance on what will be no more. Respect is all I’m saying

Things will happen organically, we've had the doors open just a few hours and I really love the response.

I totally agree about being super respectful. pOTN was a very special place for a lot of us. And i know that most if not all of us are extremely grateful and appreciative of all the hard work that went into maintaining and enhancing POTN for so. many years.

And i’m just as appreciative and grateful to all the administrators that made FoP a reality. I’m amazed at how close an experience it is to POTN. I have played around here for a while and didn’t find anything other a few minor differences that didn’t take long to get used to. You guys should be proud of yourselves!!

I would hope Pekka would put a redirect when he closes down. Why wouldn’t he?
He hasn't endorsed the forum, and it's explicitly not a continuation of POTN. What he posted in one of our threads was lukewarm at best, basically that he didn't mind if POTNers started a forum but that we'd be better off joining existing forums.

He may have thought the work would take as long as it did for him because we'd be starting from scratch, coding. Some members made the same false assumption.

That's very true. I know you all burned the midnight oil and and we are all very grateful. I guess a modern, malleable BBS package off the shelf helped. O like the look and feel of xenForo

I just did a Google search on "Focus on Photography", and discover that is already a title of a book by Davis Publications, and t is also a website https://twit.tv/shows/focus-on-photography!

Some investigation should probably be done to determine how to avoid the need to be crossing swords with Davis Publications IP attorneys!
To get preliminary insight, I will consult a close family friend who is an attorney specializing in Intellectual Property.

Yes, I found the same and several other matches that I cannot remember.

In terms of forum exposure via Google searches...

"Although Google crawls billions of pages, it's inevitable that some sites will be missed. When our crawlers miss a site, it's frequently for one of the following reasons:
  • You've just launched a new site and Google hasn't had time to crawl it yet. It can take a few weeks for Google to notice a new site, or any changes in your existing site."
