Wondering how photos get added to the gallery. In POTN, you add by clicking "Add to gallery". In some forums, it is automatic. How does it work here?

What are the benefits to posting to the gallery? I noticed that reposting a photo is not allowed here, so that couldn't be the reason...

One thing I've noticed is that when you upload to the gallery, those images are viewable by all
unless you mark it with a more private option.

You can create albums to group subjects or content, or just upload.
Either way, they're still your images, and you can add or delete at will.

The forum software treats "media" differently from "attachments", and only images uploaded directly to the gallery are "media". So I think the designers created the gallery as a special section for adding photos, videos, etc.

For example, I you click on an image (above the dark band with the description) in the gallery, you will see a sidebar with info includingEXIF. Images uploaded as attachments do not yet show EXIF as the mods are still jumping through the necessary hoops to make it work.

If you add a gallery image to a post using Sam's instructions (use the "Copy image BB code" box) there doesn't seem to be any link back to the gallery. I tried using the "Copy GALLERY BB code" and the image in the post does link back to the gallery, but it displays at a smaller size.

One of many things that seem similar to POTN but are different.

OK, thanks, Ken.

Yes, very different and also confusing.

One way to learn things is to experiment. So I have discovered that I can click on Add media when in Gallery and then do "Add media to... Latest images", which words don't convey much meaning to me, but then when I click on Upload, I can upload images from my computer, whether they are Latest or not.

Then I guess I can add these gallery images to a post later.

Interesting. When I click on "Latest images" under Navigation, I see your turtle and four other images from last week (early testing). When I click on "Browse galleries" I see everything else people have been adding to their albums.

I suppose there are reasons why someone would want to add an image to a general gallery rather than a personal album, but I don't understand why "latest images" wouldn't show everything new in the whole gallery.

I also noticed that you can create an album and allow others to add images. So someone could create a "Birds in Flight" album where people could upload their BIF pics. Doesn't make much sense here, but there are forums where photos are not the reason for the forum.

I'm sure we're all going to be figuring things out for a while.

Yeah, I've noticed the gallery features here are interesting, but I don't know that I'd use all the sharing features.

I have noticed that if you select an image and prompt for "move media item", you get two options: either (1) moving the image to a media category with a choice of either "latest images" or FoP "best of" (that sounds like admin functions rather than general member activity), or (2) you can move the image to another album.

Also, I'd like to be able to either sort images in an album or at least pin certain images to the top--obviously, it's more of a cosmetic issue. I've tried dragging images from within the album, but they just snap back to the original order. That seems like a reasonable ask since the architecture of the albums already defaults to featuring the latest 4 uploaded images.

Just kicking the tires here.

I clicked though to Archibald's gallery and I can't get any kind of info about the turtle image. Does it have EXIF? Even if it doesn't, there should be size info or something. What do I click to find that?

EDIT: OK, I see. You have to click specifically the title, which then takes you to a comment page for that image and if you scroll down you can see the image info. That's kind of clunky... maybe I'm missing a better way to just see the basic shooting settings as I flip through images?

It’s in my how to post an image faq. If only people would read the faqs! J/k, yeah, there’s a learning curve with new software for sure.

Cool. I had only glanced at that FAQ because I already knew how to post an image.

Lower down in that FAQ it talks about the gallery. It might be helpful to introduce that part by saying that one can also post images from the gallery, but that the gallery has to be populated by your pics first. The gallery here works differently than at POTN.
