I've been thinking about going to a R6 MK II, having learned on a 40D and 5D Classic..
I was sad when I discovered POTN was no longer, and I couldn't see what the used market was going for - or finding trusted sellers.. Not sure where to look next, it'll be a bit before I hit 60 posts here and I'm not sure I trust Reddit... Thinking the Canon USA Store for a refurb might be my best bet.
I was even more saddened to learn the owner of POTN had passed away.

Welp, long term POTN poster/lurker now joining FOP.

Welcome abord Chewy!

It was sad and a big shock POTN going down. I think most active POTN users have washed up hear at FoP Forum.

Enjoy!

Hi Chewy, welcome! A lot of the POTN'ers are here, so hopefully you will find our forum to be a good continuation of the POTN experience.

I would definitely keep an eye on the refurb store for deals. You should sign up for the Canonpricewatch notification emails (cpricewatch.com). While the refurb store is generally a decent deal, it becomes even better when they have their (largely unannounced) sales, so signing up for the Canonpricewatch emails keeps you abreast of these sales when they pop up.

Thanks, I stumbled on Canon Price Watch and have the alerts set up!

Hey Chewy! Welcome to Focus on Photography Forums.. We are many POTN refugees, many SmugMug DGrin folks and many people that just want to share photos and talk about photography. Glad you could join us.

As for kit and gear, B&H has some great used products if you are thinking about getting into the mirrorless realm or looking for bargains. I'm sure you will find information and thoughts on such things here. Welcome!

Welcome, Chewy!

Canon Price watch and refurb deals are the real thing. I have done biz with them several times and have been quite satisfied every time.

I had a similar path: 50D, 5S II and IV, now R6 Mark II. The R6 II is a wonderful camera.

If you are thinking about new, watch prices carefully, as the price for that camera has varied a lot. There are placed now listing it for around $2000. I think I paid $2500 a few years ago.

Canon refurbs can be a great deal. I have bought both a body and a lens that way, and they were indistinguishable from brand new, just cheaper.

My view about buying used is that I would stick with reputable places that offer warranties. Some of the major vendors do that, as does KEH. KEH is usually where I sell gear.

I stopped buying new items unless I have extreme GAS, which I have managed to resist for a while now. Only problem with the refurb store is that you have to wait for a year or so for the newer items to show up. If you are not in a hurry, it is a great way to score some like-new (some may argue better than new, since it gets an extra inspection/calibration post-factory) gear.

My first 40D was second hand. My 5Dc was from POTN. Sold my 40D on FB Marketplace but ended up wanting crop frame and faster burst photos for action shots so I bought another 40D off POTN.
My 70-200 2.8 IS was off POTN.

I think the only new gear I’ve bought was a 50 1.8 and 50 1.4 😂

I’ve got my eyes on the refurb that just restocked on Canon’s site. Through research it looks like the prices jumped about $200 or so in recent months as the new norm.. so I’m just playing the mental game of “do I wait to see if prices drop more”…

Don't forget about the tariffs. They will very soon drive up the price of new imported camera gear, and that in turn is likely to drive up the cost of used equipment and refurbs.

Way to strike the FOMO in me. I ended up grabbing a refurb from Canon. Massachusetts Tax Free Weekend too..

Now to do research on a decent RF mount walkaround lens. I grabbed the adapter to use my 70-200. It'll be interesting to see if my 2x TC will work on it.
I'm thinking a non-Canon lens will have to fit the bill for now.

Depends on how much you want to spend. You can get a RF 24-105 F/4, the quintessential walkaround lens for around $900 used. There’s also a variable aperture 24-105 for considerably less although I don’t know how good it is. Other options are sone inexpensive but excellent primes. The 16/2.8 is fantastic - @Lubos-PM has some great photos on here with it. Another option may be the nifty fifty. Both can be had for under $250. I saw the nifty fifty on sale at the refurb store for $120 last week.

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes peeled for used kit lenses in F/4; I was eyeing them but not for $1200-1300. Tempted to look at older 24-70 lenses in EF.
I also have my two 50s in EF mounts, I might just stick with those and use the RF adapter until I figure out what disadvantages that comes with.

My two most used lenses on the R6 II are the RF 24-105 f/4 (a definite improvement over the EF version) and an EF 70-200 f/4 L with a converter. The latter works flawlessly, although with the converter, it's quite long. I virtually never need the narrower max DOF from a 2.8 lens, and a one stop boost of ISO on an R6 II is trivial, so I don't see (for me) the point of the extra weight and extra expense of an f/2.8 walk-around lens. Also, I want in-lens IS, even with IBIS.

Already have the EF 70-200 2.8 IS and a 1.4 TC. So it sounds like the RF 24-105 F4 will be next on my list, now I just need someone who’s looking to unload their kit lens for cheap..!

R6 MK II has arrived and boy do I have some learning to do! So many new features and settings to figure out how to manipulate on the fly.
Do most shoot in some kind of auto mode? On my 40D and 5D I got good enough to shoot in manual and adjust things as needed. FQ0A0072.jpg
