This is hair ice. It is a type of ice forming on dead wood and mediated by the fungus Exidopsis effusa. Sorry for the lecture, but I find it fascinating. We are seeing it quite regularly at the moment ... even in the garden on woody herbs.

Fascinating, Ed. It's not something that I have ever seen.. Thank you for the explanation, we all could use a little knowledge .. ;)

Aside from being a nice image, it is interesting- it isn't something I remember seeing. Thanks for the information!

Nice! As it turns out, I am currently reading (well listening to) a book on fungi. It is really good and I think was a bestseller in the Nature/Science category. It is called “Entangled Life” and is all about fungi.

Interesting find, I have heard of this and seen a video of it forming on a wildlife programme but never seen it.

We're seeing this regularly now. It must be a good year for Exidopsis effusa – which is strange, as it is a lousy year for other fungi.
