We are hoping to start up the mini challenges here on the Focus on Photography Forum. These ran on the Dgrin photography website (associated with SmugMug) from 2008 to 2024 but that website was recently shut down. We have adapted the rules, guidelines and helpful tips for hosting mini challenges on this forum but they may need a bit more tweaking as we get started. Everyone is welcome to participate!
General Rules
1. The host supplies a topic for the challenge, and you post 1-3 images.
2. Participants have about 2 weeks to enter photos.
3. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd, Honorable Mentions) and is not eligible to enter.
4. The 1st place winner has up to 72 hrs to choose a topic and post the next challenge. When the challenge ends, the host judges the winners and passes the baton to the new champion.
5. If the winner can’t be reached or is unable to host the next mini, the honor goes to the 2nd place winner who then has up to 72 hrs to post the next challenge.
Guidelines for Participants
1. Enter 1-3 photos and put them in a single post.
2. Give each image you enter a title.
3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.
4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed, including making composites as long as everything you put in the photo is taken from a photo made by yourself.
5. If you decide to share more than 3 images, you must state which one is not an entry.
6. Enjoy discussion with members about their images. Don't let this just be an entry thread!
Guidelines for Hosting
1. Host comes up with a theme and starts a new thread, following the format used by others.
2. Give date and time the challenge will end, allowing about 2 weeks for submissions.
3. It can be helpful for the host to share 1-4 images as examples, clarifying the theme.
4. After the time/date has passed, close the thread with a post that it is closed.
5. Look over the entries and choose the winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and Honorable Mentions. (It is important to have runners up in case the winner does not show within the 72 hr window.)
6. Post the RESULTS in the same thread as the entries, following a similar format to what others have used. Feel free to offer comments on your favorite photos.
7. Message the winner that they won and have 72 hrs to post a new challenge.
8. If the winner doesn’t show up within 72 hrs or can’t run the next mini, notify the next runner-up and mention the change on the challenge thread.

[Thread Title] FoP Mini Challenge #X: [Your Theme]
[In the Thread] Describe what you are looking for with your theme. Share 1-4 of your own images as inspiration for others.
[Add this or similar text]
This mini challenge will run for two weeks, ending [fill in date] at [fill in time and time zone]. Results will be announced a day or two later.

Other Helpful Tips
1. The Focus on Photography Forum allows up to 4 images per post and all images must be no more than 1600 x 1600 pixels.
2. To add titles to your entries, enter text before adding the photo. The top edge of the photo will appear where you left the cursor. If you enter more than one image, hit return after adding the first image. This will move the cursor to the left margin so you can create a title for your second entry and then embed or attach another image.
3. Feel free to consult the Mini Challenge Archives for ideas for possible mini-challenge topics and to see what has been done recently.
