I'm posting this just in case anyone is experiencing "odd" behaviour with SD cards in their R5mkII. I'd previously used an older SD card, while waiting on a newer/faster card to arrive.

The 'old' card I'd initially used was a 64GB SanDisk SD card, which I (re)formatted (including with "low-level format" selected) in my R5mkII - and it worked just fine.

I then received my 'new' card, a 256GB SanDisk SD card, which I also formatted (1st thing out of the box) using "low-level format" in my R5mkII. After using it for some test shots, I then loaded the image files to my computer - and had serious difficulty using them. Adobe Bridge/Raw/Photoshop didn't like the .CR3 files, nor did it like .JPGs. Some of the JPGs wouldn't load in Adobe products, but would with a photo-viewer application. Some JPGs would load into Adobe products - but with warnings. I repeatedly tested assorted combinations of re-formatting, re-testing etc. without any improvement.

Until, that is: I took the same card, reformatted it (low-level, then without) in my old 5DmkIV. I haven't had a single problem with that card in my R5mkII since. Go Figure!!

(Note: any image files I actually wanted, I could get from the CF Express card I was also using.)

I'm not sure what - if anything! - this might prove or even indicate. But I thought I'd "put it out here" to see if anyone else recognises the symptoms or has other 'oddness' to report.

I don't have an R5 II, but I have never had that kind of experience with any SD card in any Canon body.

Did you try formatting it a second time in the R5?

Seems to me that there are only two possibilities: either something went wrong with the formatting process, or the card is defective. Perhaps the Canon formatting routine is smart enough to block off bad sectors, and it did that the second time. I don't think I would gamble on the card, given that it's only $22. However, I would be keeping my eye out for any other weird formatting with that body.

Possibly a counterfeit card? Was it from Amazon?

For camera storage, I use nothing but Lexar Professional 2000X SD cards

I wouldn't take this one case--even if it is a problem with the card--as an indication to avoid Sandisk cards or to buy expensive ones. I've used almost exclusively Sandisk memory for as long as I've been in digital, probably 15 years, with no hiccups at all. In my R6 II, I have two Sandisk cards, one comparable to the Lexar 2000 in price and speed, and the other an old 200 mps one I took out of my last 5D IV when I sold it, now available at B&H for $15. Works perfectly.

I'm really puzzled by the OP. I don't think there is any way to figure out without more data whether the problem is the camera, the card, or an interruption of the initial formatting.

Just an update on this - while the card performed better after being formatted in my 5D4, that might have been purely 'accidental' - since it continued to have problems albeit fewer of them. I did some further testing, and those problems occurred regardless of the camera I used it in.

Because of that, I returned the card for a refund and bought replacement cards (also SanDisk), from a different source.

My best guess is that this was just "one dud card" which, I suppose, happens from time to time (though I've mostly been lucky).
