Saints Constantine (Cyril) and Methodius (sometimes referred to as the Thessalonian brothers, the Apostles of the Slavs or the Slavic heralds) were Christian missionaries, priests, monks and brothers from Thessalonica who, as part of their mission in Great Moravia, promoted Old Slavonic as the language of worship, for which Constantine also created a script called Glagolitic. In 1981, Pope St. John Paul II declared them co-patrons of Europe.
