Common Snapping Turtles of Ohio

I encounter these guys quite frequently - especially while birding in the spring.
They are the largest turtle species in Ohio. Quite impressive in size and appearance.

Their courtship ritual is quite a sight.
And a bit rough looking.

I found a cute little guy basking in the sun...


I came back an hour and a half later only to find a slightly larger one in the exact same postion.

On logs and flotsam mostly

But sometimes on land

The courtship was surprisingly energetic and long. I was lucky to be in the right spot at the right time.
I had the place all to myself - not sure how much time I spent there nor how many images I shot. Glad I wasn't shooting film
