Colour popping

I did this long ago and I sometimes like the effect,
but I'd love to find a simple PhotoShop tutorial for doing this.

I did selective coloring with this one back in 2008 and asked for tips
on how to do it, but most responses came at me with "It's such a tired look."
I can't find my result, but I'd love to play with it some more.

Don't be scared! This only looks like a real cicada, but it is only art, just like the theater is for GlenArt's sake. Full color shot with no editing or color popping going on whatsoever. The background wall and ceiling were all a dull grey. The grey bulbs were just either burnt out or not switched on where the yellow ones were actually on. Notice the movie strip theme on the cicada wings.

@fotoi and @Lester Wareham , I believe you've missed my reason for posting.

The picture I posted was in full-color mode; I've wanted to do selective color processing on it,
but nobody seemed interested, claiming I was wanting to use a 'tired' method on it.
Somebody did a full edit on it, while never explaining how it was done.
I'd like to learn how it was done. PS6 user here.

Not sure why you are directing that comment at me, I don't think I have posted in this thread, neither have I tried the technique. I might see if I can find something to try though.

Sorry, Lester. I'm not sure about it, either, now that I've looked back.
Musta been taking a mental vacation. o_O

Try the tutorial from YouTube. I can't paste the link for some reason, but the Channel is Anna Gaudio and the title of video is Photoshop CS6 Selective Color.
