I shot my first men's basketball of the 23-24 season at Southern Oregon University today. It is fun getting back into bball.

It was a quieter day than normal in the gym with most of the students gone and the game being played at a rather early 2 pm.

How did you get the permission to take pictures? Last time I went to a basketball game, the signs stated that cameras with long lenses were not allowed.

NCAA D II basketball that I shot the day before the ones above. Just getting back to looking at them.

Sorry for not responding sooner. I shoot for the athletic department of the university but at smaller schools there are less rules.

If you want to shoot at a smaller university ask. It is possible they will let you.

Thank you for your tip! I will try. But it's a median-size university. There are students who are officially assigned to take pictures. I guess they wouldn't let me do so.
Anyway, the other day I managed to use a 135mm manual lens to shoot. Since it is shorter than 8 inches, they let me bring it. All I needed to do was to do some testing before the game to get the best focus for the space near the hoop.

I shoot for a wire service for college and for a couple of D2 schools that I have relationships with the SID (Sports Information Director). At the D2 schools, the SID has students shooting too but they allow me to shoot as well.

colleges are limiting access. They want to control all the media for publication. They want to have complete control of what goes out for recruiting and NIL. ALL positive. It is all IMAGE. Just like SI died colleges and universities are taking control of ALL narratives put out. Recruiting is their life blood. Their IMAGE is everything. D@ and D# schools are still happy to have you. D1 can use students to shoot tons of content spray and pray and get enough content. Plus they are cheap. football isnt so bad yet because 1. there is a lotta room 2. Susie/Johnny cant shoot football. Ive seen newspapers denied coverage because they do not provide enough national exposure just local. and the little vidkids are all over taking up prime space in tight places like courtside. JMTOTS I can still shoot but its becoming a real pain. Anyone else see this?

also Ive seen a lot of media outlets just steal pics off twitter and use them

@Burnet44, I have seen it harder to get into the closest D1 school to me. But with wire service, I haven't had issues with any others at all. I haven't been to many basketball games this year because I think I started to burn out from all the football I shot this fall.
