Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM

I originally used the 200-800 with my R7 and was slightly disappointed as it seemed soft above 600 with the R7 (even after Canon had replaced the 4th element) but today with the R6 mk II I am very pleased with the sharpness of it at 800mm handheld. Now it could be that the R7 needs a much higher shutter speed for hand held shooting, will test it on a bright day but today was overcast which is why I took the R6ii.

Here is another one from today.

Here are my first and last shots on the RF 200-800mm. Last shots you ask?? Yep...I returned it and probably made someone waiting in line very happy.

I'll be the first to admit the GAS and FOMO was strong with this lens. But alas it did not live to expectations. Not that it is a bad lens...just that it does not compare to my RF 100-500L. It is not as sharp and felt during the edits that I was sharpening more than usual. Is it fair to compare it to an L lens? Maybe, maybe not.

The other reason was a BIG one...literally! This thing is a beast! It is heavy and tough to handle! I'm in my 60s now and have bad knees and a heart condition. And even though I'm 6'1 I found myself struggling. I also don't like carrying a tripod/monopod. Additionally I really love the weight savings I got when I went from the EF 100-400 II to the RF 100-500L. So if I want 800mm focal length I still have the F11 as well as the R7 that gives the 100-500L an effective focal length 160-800mm.

So there ya have it and thanks for reading!

I can understand it. I too am getting older now and going from a heavy 1DIV to a much lighter R6 and now R6m2, with the 100-500mm was a blessing. The 200-800 would add a full metric pound. That’s quite a bit and very noticeable and it would bring me right back to where I was with my 1DIV.

Still, as Ed just showed, it’s a lens that can deliver.

I've only recently acquired the RF 200-800 and, yes, it is a big beast and on the heavy side as well (though full credit to Canon for keeping the weight down as much as they have).

I'll put it at the outer edge of hand-held shooting for me, but even so I can use it (as yet only, really, for 'test' shots like this one, taken the one time so far that I've been able to take it for a walk):

...Mike
