According to this

They should work but I find the autofocus very poor -any ideas? It is not the lens I think as I have tested it with another camera.
I have firmware 1.5.0 should I upgrade to 1.6?
The camera seems to work with birds ok I just tested with the Canon 60mm and it was fine
 
Do you have enough light to focus if lower the shutterspeed or increase iso does it grab focus better?
 
Not exactly the same setup as you but I use the Sigma 150 non OS quite successfully with my R5 although focus isn’t as fast as a more modern lens it does work ok including image stacking
Does sound like your lens was faulty though and you have returned it anyway
