Canon EOS R7 Owners Unite! Discuss and Share Photos

Looks like I'm bumping this thread again, although this time I wish I wasn't.

At about 5:00 this morning, a certain cat knocked my camera pouch off the dresser. Inside was my R7, with 18-150 attached. Well, only some of it remained attached!

(It's actually my fault because I didn't get that pouch for this particular body/lens combo, and I knew it wasn't well protected in there, but I thought, what could possibly happen just sitting on my dresser?)

I do most of my shooting with the RF 100-400, but I like the 18-150 range when I need it. I haven't been considering the new Sigma 18-50, but now I'm not so sure.

The camera is fine, and it's almost the end of my photo season anyway--and my kids' fall tuitions are paid--so I'll ponder the options for a bit. In the meantime, I have an RF 28mm pancake, and an adapted EF-mount Sigma 17-70 (one of my all-time favorite lenses!) to tide me over.

Man, that is a bummer!

The 18-150mm is an increadibly versatile lens. I've never seen that kind of distruction. I've had a couple of drops, that required the lens to be serviced, but nothing this extreme! At least you have the opportunity to ponder.

Now, the sigma 18-50mm is really nice. I haven't used it on the R7 yet (I should), I have only used it with the R50. I find the Sigma 18-50mm + R50 to be a great compact normal zoom combo! I've never used the Sigma 17-70mm, so can't compare.

I really like the 18-150, and I'll probably pony up for another one eventually. It's a great travel lens. I loved the EF-M version I got with the M5 kit, also for travel. Based on that experience, I didn't hesitate to jump at it when Canon announced it as the kit lens for the R7.

Sigma makes good lenses, and I'm sure the 18-50 is a great lens too. With the R7, I won't miss IS, but I'll definitely miss the extra 100mm. I don't often shoot in low light or wide open, so constant f/2.8 isn't a factor for me.

The eye piece cover on my R7 is torn. What's the best way to fix it? Can I acquire the repair part and the tiny screwdriver easily. Or should I send to Canon (I do have CPS membership).20241027_154121.jpg

If you have CPS membership, get them to do it. They can also do a clean and get everything checked out. Looks like it could use a cleaning! :run:

Canon USA posted R7 firmware version 1.6.0 on October 30. Some of the other international Canon subsidiaries had posted it in September, when Canon released updates for many other bodies, so maybe Canon USA was waiting for the official announcement of the RF-S 7.8mm Dual (item 2 below).

There's also an updated R7 user manual for v1.6.0 at cam.start.canon. I didn't compare the two in great detail, but I noted that, in many places where the original 2022 manual said LP-E6NH, the new edition adds LP-E6P. Many, but not all, notably, not in the warning about H+ shooting speed performance on page 507. I assume this is an oversight, since #1 below says "without limitation" and specifically says "the same continuous shooting speed as when using LP-E6NH".

The 2022 manual also lists WPA2 and WPA3 in the Wi-Fi specifications, and has a note on page 917 about Wi-Fi printer connections requiring WPA3, but it doesn't mention them anywhere else. The new manual talks about enabling WPA2, but not WPA3 (even the note about WPA3 for printers is gone).

From the Canon USA web site:
>>>
Firmware Version 1.6.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1. Enables functions to be used without limitation in conjunction with the new Battery Pack LP-E6P.
This makes it possible to shoot at the same continuous shooting speed as when using LP-E6NH.
In-camera charging of LP-E6P is also supported.
2. Enables RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lenses to be compatible with designated camera.
3. Adds the ability to select [WPA2] and [WPA3] as a secured protocol.
4. The following issues have been fixed.
4-1. Fixes an issue, in which when SPEEDLITE EL-5, EL-10 is attached, the "Accessory unavailable status" message may be displayed when restarting after the camera has gone into Auto Power Off. (Only occurs with firmware Ver.1.5.0)
4-2. Fixes an issue, in which when performing shooting in high-speed continuous shooting + mode with the [Highlight Tone Priority] option set to [ON], focus may not be achieved when certain ISO speed settings are used.

If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.6.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Notes:
Users manual in the WEB is updated accordingly. Please download the manual as well as the latest firmware. You can download it from the official WEB site.
