I have a technical question...

I just received a RF 24-70 and trying it out on my wife's R6 it won't manual focus with the switch in the AF position. When I mounted it on my R5, there was no problem manually focusing it while the switch was on AF. Both will manual focus with the switch on MF.

I even tried my RF 50 f1.8 and RF 70-200 f4 with mixed results. They both manually focus the 70-200 with the switch in the AF position but only the R5 will manually focus the 50.

I went through the AF settings on both cameras and they are identical.

What am I missing? Besides the obvious few brain cells...

Well, I solved the issue with a reset of the R6 but I would like to know what setting was gumming up the works. I’ll continue to look and if anyone has an idea or answer I’d love to hear it.

Menu AF5 - Electronic full-time MF = on

Is that it?

It’s nice to see people starting to contribute to this thread, even if the R6 has been replaced by something newer in the Canon lineup. I hope it will inspire others.

The R6 is my main rig, so happy to contribute. I came close to pulling the trigger on an R6II as part of the refurb sale, but still love the R6. How about one from a recent airshow? :)

Okay, I found the discussion. It started here between Dave63401 and John Sheehy: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=19379998

The conclusion was:

Full Time Manual in Servo mode and with AF, works with certain lenses, but not with others.
For instance, it works with the RF 100-500mm lens. But not with the RF 800/11 lens.

However, in One Shot mode it does work with lenses that don't support FTM. You do that by first autofocusing and then keeping the shutter button half pressed. After that you can turn the focus ring to manually focus. Which is not very helpful if you need to be in Servo mode.

The above however assumes you use the shutter button to autofocus. If you remove the AF from the shutter button and use full back-button focus, you will also have Full Time Manual override, on all your lenses. Apparently with the AF on a back button, the system sees that as the shutter button half pressed and that makes sense actually.

That's it! My wife doesn't like back button focus and I put focus start back on the shutter button when she started using the R6. The camera was still set up with Servo AF.

I knew that neither the lens or the camera were defective and it had to be settings. Even though the reset "fixed it", it was still bothering the heck out of me.

And this is why all those threads over on POTN need to be preserved somehow...

I have actually exported as pdf a number of threads, like the R6 and the R6II and the R7 threads. We will make them available on Focus somewhere so people can access them. Maybe in Resources. Not sure yet. But these threads have been preserved.

Hoy recojo mi nueva R6, después de 12 años usando mi querida 6D, he decidido dar el paso al mirrorless, espero poder aportar algo dentro de mis posibilidades. Saludos.
