Canon EOS R5 Mark II Owners Unite: Discuss and Post Photos!

Hi, I have an R5 Mk2 and the Register/recall shooting func is missing, I have only Switch to registered AF func but I am not suire how this actually works when you also do BBF with AF-ON.

So say you have Metering and AF start set to AF-ON button and Switch to registered AF func set to * button. Typically I would be pressing AF-ON with my thumb to focus according to the chosen options, but if I move my thumb on * button I do get the AF function configured but no focusing...

I don't know if this has been mentioned...

For a camera costing an arm and a leg, it comes with the cheapest, nastiest neck strap of any camera I have ever bought.. I have immediately replaced it with something much more comfortable. Canon's loss, as they lose the free advertising they were getting every time I went out with my previous Canon dSLRs.

Mine overheated and shut down on me, but I think it was from solar heating and not camera operation. I was sitting around after lunch and noticed some bees around some asters in the yard. Even though it was mid-afternoon, I decided to shoot with the 100/2.8 and a flash for a bit. I was only out about 20 minutes and took around 50 shots, but I was mostly sitting in one spot with the sun to my left. After the camera shut down I started feeling around the rig, and the top left of the lens barrel was very hot. The left side of the camera was a bit warmer than the right, but not extreme. So I'm guessing the heat from the lens was being transferred to the sensor.

Air temp was no more than 80F, but the sky was clear and the sun was just past meridian at about a 50deg angle. The elevation at my house is about 4,600 feet, so the sun can be very intense. In fact I was thinking I'd enjoyed that spot enough myself when it shut down.

I don't remember ever using an original manufacturer's neck strap. My R5 Mark II strap is still in its little paper wrapper. Op/Tech for the win!

Observation:

I am getting the impression the '0' EV metering (on evaluative with no nasty tricks) is closer to 'zero' than my previous Canon dSLRs. I have always thought they tended to underexpose when set to 0 EV. I did a lot of default shooting at +0.5 EV, and when bracketing at -1, 0, +1 EV often picked the +1 (even if it often meant applying a bit of -ve exposure in ACR).

But on processing the initial shots from the R5II, I am finding the 0 EV (on evaluative with no nasty tricks) is being impressively accurate.

Ha-ha - Op/Tech duly bought and attached. (y)

I must have a thick neck to have used the ones supplied in the past. :p

I guess this only switches to the registered AF func and does not focus, this you have to do with shutter button or, if configured, the af-on button.

A couple of shots from yesterday, looking at how well it crops big - good old digital zoom...

Taken with the old EF 200 mm f2.8L II, on a monopod...

Dredger, outside Leith harbour...

There's a bit of air heat distortion thingy, due to the distance. The trailer park in the background is 8.5 Km away.

New firmware(1.01) available:

Our computers, tablets, phones and TVs update their software automatically from the internet. My friend's dishwasher updated itself last week. Should our cameras not be doing the same by now?

No! Only when I want it.
(and if you use the camera connect app on your phone it works through the internet;)) https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/67937157

Amazing coincidence I was at that exact spot, going through the manual. So, without missing a beat, I followed the instructions - next to none - and Firmware 1.0.1 is now installed! (y)

I updated, but I wasn't experiencing any of the problems addressed in the firmware. After some use this afternoon it does seem like a stable release. At least for my purposes.
