As the originator of the POTN discussion thread hadn't posted to it in a year, here's a new one. I bought this fantastic camera a few months ago and have been having a blast with it. It's simply an incredible device. Now "only" $5000 in the USA.

What I love:
- computing power and AF speed
- battery life (sorry, Bob, it is normally really good)
- ergonomics (integrated grip, but smaller than the 1D series)
- control options galore
- no rolling shutter distortion for normal sports photography
- great FF sensor, great image quality
- in-camera charging
- I have never thought it needed more megapixels

What I dislike, mostly just irritations that Canon should fix in firmware
- no pre-shooting
- no USB tethered access to Camera Connect
- cheesy fake shutter sound in ES is just audio clutter, masking the actual shooting rate
- voice memo implementation could be better

Might add to these lists in the future!

I'd like to hear how others are using that. So far, it is not something I use although I greatly anticipated having it pre-purchase! But in real life I just move the camera around to put the focus point on my subject. I usually shoot action.

So despite thinking it was a great feature, I honestly don't know why I would use it. It's a composition aid, I guess. Maybe if I forced myself to use it for a while I would realize a benefit. Thinking about it right now, I can visualize how it might be helpful even in sports, but the calibration would really have to be perfect so that I could look at one player sandwiched tightly between two other players and get the focus locked on the right one.

With the camera on a tripod, I can totally see using it to move the focus to the right point. And I will be doing some tripod work this winter.

I mentioned the voice memo feature. Is anyone using it? I had envisioned hitting that button and recording a memo that became associated with the last pic. Well it does work like that, sort of, but IMO it's not as easy as it could be and I so far have not used it.

It only works while the last image is displayed (during auto playback or you hit the play button) and you have to hold the mic button down for two seconds first. It's as if Canon wants it to be so hard that it can't ever happen accidentally. I thought I had seen a setting that affected the way this was triggered but I can't find one now that I'm looking. I would love to have a button just record while pressed, and that memo is associated with the last frame. Hold for two seconds? I can see that if you absolutely HAVE to share the button with Rate but what if you don't have to?

Who's using Voice Memos?

I tried eye AF when I first got my R3. Whilst it worked, I just wasn't comfortable with it and I haven't used it since. I sometimes think I should have another go with it but since the usual AF settings work so well I've never bothered.

I haven't used it all that much, either. I do try it every now and then but haven't really found situations where it provides enough benefits for me to bother with the calibration steps. Most of the time, the other AF methods work better anyway.
But I keep trying, and looking for examples of where it is of significant help.

I use the voice memo when shooting hockey, rugby or cricket where its not possible to identify the players from the image. I tag the images and add the voice memo so when I get the chance to work on images later I pull through only the tagged images with the recorded voice memos. This helps with captioning, particularly if shooting players I'm not familiar with. You can replay the voice recording in Photo Mechanic when you're adding the caption details.

Do you use the rate button the default way for that? Holding for two seconds first?

I use it sporadically, for the reasons you mention above. If it were easier to use I would use it more often.

Good to see you found your way here. You on FB as well?

Here's something fun I just discovered: when plugged in to a proper USB-C port, it will start charging even when turned on, as soon as it goes to sleep. Either the wording in the manual or my assumptions led me to believe it had to actually be switched off before it would start in-camera charging.

The vast majority of my R3 charging is in-camera. It's the only way I have to charge my R7, so that one is 100% in-camera.

I use voice memo occasionally. Rarely enough not to be bothered by the handling. But I don't think I'd appreciate immediate recording just because you happen to touch the button.
Eye control I sometimes use, but I've found I have to use the camera without glasses for that to work well. Something I can do, but normally I don't. I have to adjust the diopter rating a bit to do that, and then back again when I do wear my glasses.

I've been messing around with button customizations and now find that AEB disables my BBF. Does anyone know why this would be? I have turned AEB on and off a few times and the cause is clear. The AF-On button is set to metering and AF, and the M-Fn2 button is set to register/recall shooting settings. Both work when AEB is off, and neither works when AEB is on. The manual does not indicate that AEB should affect this. Any ideas?

Although I don't have exactly these settings for my AF-ON and M-Fn2 buttons, the buttons do execute their assigned function even when AEB is set on my camera. This is true both before the first image has been taken and when an AEB sequence is somewhere inside the sequence of taking three pictures. Firmware is 1.6.0.

After resetting the camera, the "Metering and AF" function works on a back button but "Register/recall shooting func" still doesn't work on a front button. I assume it's the function that doesn't work, rather than the particular button. But I can try it on a different button.
