They have plenty of rooms available but the accommodations are terrible.I've always wondered what happens if you miss the last ferry back. Do you get the spend the night in one of the cells? That's got to be quite an experience in itself!![]()

BadaDUMPThey have plenty of rooms available but the accommodations are terrible.
That’s pretty cool info!in the mid-80s they always told everyone going over to the island that while there were over 300 (maybe it was 500?) toilets, none of them worked.
by the early 00s, they had remodeled the NPS visitor center and fixed the restroom issues.
we went on a 'night' tour where we had to have special reservations and we got some 'behind the scenes' tours. like the upper level where the hospital was, and some other areas (i dont remember now though. its been nearly 25 years).
interesting bit of trivia. in the movie The Rock (Ed Harris, Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, Michael Beihn) there is a shoot out scene in a shower room where the 'bad guys' held the high ground and some Seals or other special forces were trying to come up through a sewer system. it was filmed DURING THE DAY, along with all the other scenes inside WHILE people were there visiting the site. they production company (if i recall) was able to film for free or a very small fee, but they could NOT shut down the site to do so.
Beautiful! Visiting Itsukushima was one of the highlights of my last trip to Japan. Even some off my Japanese colleagues told me that they had never been there.sunset over Itsukushima Shrine (Hiroshima, Japan) at low tide

Yes, it is a stunning place indeed. I had seen it several times previously but on my last visit it was during low tide which was a first for me.Beautiful! Yes, went to Miyajima and stayed on the island!Yes, it is a stunning place indeed. I had seen it several times previously but on my last visit it was during low tide which was a first for me.
Did you stay/visit Miyajima island? I told my wife that the next time we go, I could stay the entire time on that island. But hard to not visit Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka. That's what the unlimited rail pass is for, right? Travel in style and efficiency and luxury especially if you upgrade to unlimited first class![]()
