Today my camera is taking pictures. I wish I knew for sure WHY!?!?!
That's consistent with dirty contacts. In fact, simply switching lenses could have been enough to dislodge some dirt.
I really wouldn't worry about firmware at this point. If the camera and lens worked with the old firmware before, there is no reason for them to stop working just because new firmware has been released. The main reasons to update firmware are (1) if you have a clearly firmware-related issue, which I think you don't; (2) if the new firmware offers new features you want; or (3) you have reason to believe your old firmware has been corrupted.
The simplest thing would be to clean your contacts and then go take pictures, changing lenses to see (1) whether the problem recurs after cleaning, and (2) whether it is limited to one lens.
