Did anybody else get this email from Calibrite about the "URGENT" update for their PROFILER software for their color calibrators (as well as older X-Rite i1 Display calibrators that have been upgraded)?

It sounds very ominous, and more than a little fantastic. Why would current hardware and software stop working, just because they released a new version? Is this just fearmongering for a critical bug fix? Did they leave a beta timebomb enabled in the release software? Do they have their own "Y2K" type problem? Do they want users to accept a new terms of service? Did they get sued and have to change their algorithm?

It seems very strange to me.

No, and I would be suspicious. Did you check that it was sent from a plausible email address? That's not sufficient--they can be spoofed--but sometimes phishers don't bother and use an address that gives them away. YOu can RIGHT click on the link--do NOT left click--and paste it into a text editor to see if it's reasonable. but the safest would be to contact X-Rite and ask.

Their website lists that new software version but has no alarmist text like your email had.

I received the same email. AFAICT, Calibrite is the sender. The update might fix a security issue, or they found a major bug. The release notes don't provide much detailed information, but clearly there were fixes to the colour engine.

Updates to colour engine

Improved communication with colour engine

so what do they say when you reply and ask for an explanation?

I'm curious about the "your previous version of the software will not work" part, but I don't know the product. Is there a client-server aspect to it?

Thanks for the responses everyone! The email came from a calibrite.com address. The download link in the email also goes to calibrite.com.

(Checking embedded links isn't always a good test anymore because many companies use obfuscated links through third-party analytics-gathering sites.)

I found this on the Calibrite US support page (https://calibrite.com/us/calibrite-technical-support-home/):

So it would appear to be legit.

Calibrite don't list a general "support" email that I can forward it to, but I'm going to submit a contact form to ask about it and see what they say.

Let us know.. My product is so old I forgot I even had it, so I was surprised by the email!

I wonder if I can find the device!

I got a response from Calibrite to my support question:

Yes, it did come from Calibrite. The color library in Calibrite PROFILER v1.3.2 has been updated to allow future 64-bit compatibility. This change allows us to realize enhanced performance of our color engine while decreasing profile creation times and increasing the quality of the profiles. This change is made with an eye to the future as we continue to enhance Calibrite PROFILER software and develop camera, scanner and printer profiling modules. The change in the color library requires that Calibrite PROFILER software be upgraded to v1.3.2 so that future innovations will be available to all our valued customers.

No word as to why this is "URGENT" or why the previous version would stop working, but that may be marketing hyperbole (or this may be only a partial answer). I'm long overdue for calibration and I still have the previous version installed, so I'll give it a shot sometime this week. I'll be sure to have a fire extinguisher nearby! :ROFLMAO:

Update: I calibrated today, using the previous version of the PROFILER app (1.3.1), and it worked just fine. Nothing blew up, but it did phone home and tell me three times (once at the start, once after calibrating each of my two monitors) that there was a "critical update" available. But it let me close and continue without downloading or installing the update.

Normally I do try to use the latest software, but I was curious to know if the previous version would still work despite their doom-and-gloom email warnings (and I got another email about it from them this morning too, BTW).
