Travel Guide
Bocawina is a lodge inside Mayflower Bocawina National Park. But the lodge is not a park or a jungle. The lodge is cleared land sprinkled with bushes and old trees. The pathways and cabins are bordered with ornamentals. As a guest, you are entitled to enter the park for exploring and for activities. That is something best done in a group or with a guide.
The main focus of the lodge is adventure activities like rafting, rappelling up waterfalls, and ziplining. When I was there, there were also some bird watchers with their binoculars.
Bird photography worked well on the lodge grounds, with the main species being small birds like seedeaters and warblers. There was a small flock of guinea fowl. Some other species would show up from time to time. In the actual park, birding was much more difficult. I had a guide, but he spent most of his time talking about Mayan ruins and natural health remedies. The birds were mostly high up in the trees in bad light.
While at Bocawina I went on the Monkey River tour. This was expensive and took most of the day, but was a productive outing. I was able to get photos of birds, bats, monkeys, and turtles.
The grounds of the lodge look like this.
