Six species in this one picture!

Baan.. wait until the GBH start nest building in the back of the preserve.. Where the palm trees are located. It's fenced so you'll need a tripod and at least 400mm.
It's amazing to see the Great Blue Herons in the tops of the trees with nest so big you could sit in them!

very cool! I only have a 70-200. Will look at getting a 200-600 sometimes later in the future :)

Because of the weather in SoCal, anytime. There are birds there that are migratory, spending their time in better weather than they would have in the North.
There are nesting Terns there, in an area that is "Off Limits" because they nest on the ground. But, they fly about, also the Skimmers are always fun. Go to the bridge to view them.

Which bridge? The one at the corner of Warner/PCH ?

My usual walk would be this in the red. I don't spend much time here tbh, laziness comes to play hehe. The green spot is where I found the massive groups shown in the thread. They saw the school of fish or something and all flew and settled there for the short time.

The Bridge in the middle of the Reserve.. The Skimmers love to fish in that area, plus you get a bunch of waders hunting. If you park off Warner across from the Fire Station, and walk across that "New" Bridge.. You'll see the cyclone fencing where some photog put sticks for perches for the little hunters. Keep walking along the path and eventually you come to the old foundations that were used during WWII to spot enemy ships. The GBH's nest in those palms and other trees behind the fencing. Keep walking and you can go to the left around the fencing and I've found woodpeckers and smaller birds. Walk straight and you get back to the Bridge in the middle of the Reserve.

I don't know how it is now, but no cycling was allowed or dogs, but people broke the rules all the time, which can ruin the birding experience

There are similar nests in palm trees a bit further south, at Dana Point harbor, near the Nordhavn Yachts building.

thanks. I tried to go yesterday but several roads and blocks were closed due to some sort of marathon/running going on. decided to just go home and wait till maybe next week. did not want to be stuck in traffic.

I miss that place. I went almost every week while visiting my Mom.
Since she passed, I've only been back a few times when visiting friends in Long Beach.

It should be good after the rains, the birds will be hungry ;)

I've actually got it good here.. We have a group that is buying up land and setting it up for eternal protection and birds are returning by the flock!
On the way up to Joshua Tree, there is an obscure preserve that has birding every week and they spot 20 to 30 species every week.. some I had no idea were here.
Heck I had a Little Green Heron land in my backyard last year!

Didn't get much today. one keeper. no idea what this is. Is it the Kestrel or something else? falcon?
