I added a small LED to the macro diffuser that I use with my flash. Now my diffuser lights up, making it possible to shoot at night. Here is one of my first attempts, a crane fly.

The photos look the same as when taken in daylight. Focusing is much harder, though.

I'm hoping to be able to photograph bugs that come out at night.

Humm, I find it easier to focus at night. I can see the display so much better without having the bright sky reflecting from it. I use a pretty bright headlamp and hand held light to find critters, then shine the hand light into the back of the diffuser while I’m composing and focusing.
This time of year, around here, an insect head-net is a must have.
