6th of June 1944, D-Day, The Longest Day

An excellent set of photographs, but I feel that I must correct a slight misconception. The first troops to land on D-Day were British Paratroopers, Specifically, D Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry who landed by glider at 00:15 on June 6, 1944, to seize the Caen Canal and the River Orne bridges . These bridges are now known as Pegasus and Horsa Bridges.

American paratroopers also landed in Normandy before the main beach landings, These were the Paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division 'Screaming Eagles' who jumped on June 6, between 00:48 and 01:40 British Double Summer Time. 6,928 troops were carried aboard 432 C-47s part of plan 'Albany', but the fact remains that the British secured their objectives first.
